Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by gertie, Dec 14, 2012.

  1. Hi All - was thinking of doing an oil change on sunday - whats the general consensus on bits that should be replaced in this oil change - last one was about 2000 miles ago and the filter and strainer were replaced....oh and its a type 4 1800 fuel injected

any thoughts will be gratefully received

    cheers Jason

I "personally" (note the " ") am only dropping the oil and filter when i do mine over xmas, "I" don't see the point of changing the strainer everytime, the oil is still clean and i'm only doing it 'cos it's my van, if it had been the car i'd leave it another year.

  3. Thanks BD........thats what "I" was thinking too......it's also on the shelf in Halfrauds !!

    cheers

  5. not the last time i looked but only a fiver from GSF Mann ones too

  6. ...err yeh...master of assumption here....GSF it is then! :headscratch2:

  7. I change the oil on my 1600 about every 2000 miles. And the filter gauze every other change. Oil is cheap especially as only 2.5 litres is needed  Engines are not cheap.

Additionally, I've attached a powerful magnet to the sump plate to attract metal particles. It's actually the old aerial base of a CB radio.

  10. I found ali (non-magnetic) shards in my gauze - any ideas on a likely culprit?

  14. I use the neodynium magnets from old computer hard drives on the sump plate. They are really strong.

You don't do it often enough then!
You have to remember the oil in an air cooled actually cools the engine as well as lubricates.

5k's fine with an oil filter.

  20. Every three thousand miles apparently?? Sounds like every time your insurance mileage runs out?? Will definitely be changing oil before he sits around over the winter next year!!
