2 hours, swearing, rain - handbrake cable!!

  1. On top of the minor welding required to pass the MOT, the handbrake is particularly useless.
After the fun earlier in the week with hub nuts etc then discovering I was having Blonde moments, wheel drums off , brakes all sorted, adjusters greased rusty bits replaced, the handbrake cables turned out to be so stretched, they must have been on the van for at least 10 years. I spent 2 hours today attempting to free the white metal end casting that fits into the steel fitting on the rear backplate of the old cable. What an absolute beeeeech! In the end I had to cut through with a grinder and then drill out from inside and out! Finally the replacement cable was fitted, about 1.5 inches shorter than the outgoing cable! No wonder I had sod all handbrake. Grrrrr

I ran out of time on the other side but looks the same, never thought the steel would gel so well with the alloy?

So if you are doing a similar factor in extra time for this job. What should have been a simple fairly quick job was not!

    snotty and paradox like this.
  2. Well done, chap. Mine were well rusted in as well and required the attention of Mr Molegrips. I smeared some Copaslip on the mating surfaces of the new ones.

  3. Yes same here. The best bit is water dripping off the wheel arch onto my leg at the front whilst spending an age tightening up the nut , whilst a small pond working its way to my back ( with my fleece on) deffo had a wet bottom today hahaha

  4. Last MOT mine had gone beyond stretched! One was a hairs width thin and the other completely snapped. No wonder I had to park in gear on hills! I got the garage to sort mine out, so well done on doing it yourself!
