1977-T2/import Redditch - HELP !

Discussion in 'Introduce Yourselves' started by Adventure-bus, Sep 6, 2011.

  1. Hi everyone

After going to a local rental company and hiring a T2 for short hold on the coast, I've finally taken the plunge to buying a 1977 T2. Was amazed when she arrived last night hardly any rust, an Austrian Museum import so kept indoors a lot of time. Chuffed as nutts.

This said I haven't a clue ha ha, looking for help on where to buy rear panels to turn into a 3/4 van ( forgive me for lack of knowledge) but I love the look where the back of the van has no windows just paneled and the mid section has windows left in, hope I'm making sense. I've looked on justcampers but can't find where to buy the rear panels to do this, has anyone got any info to help - also anyone from Redditch I could hook up with who has more experience to divulge ideas over a pint ?

Look forward to any help, gratefully received.

    Paul.

Oh would be interested if anyone has an engine and gearbox for sale too.

That's normally done the other way around. I.e they start with a panel van (no windows) and cut the centre ones out.
Presumably yours was an original combi so you'd always have had all the windows. IMHO panelling over the rear ones will be a big mistake both in terms of the work and the effect on your vans value....
Each to their own though, that's just my thoughts.

Hi matey, welcome, to clarify a little here, you have a camper/panel van conversion, that has the rear windows and you want them blanked back off?
If so then all our vans started as either panels (no windows) or micro busses (windows) this is evident to how the windows look...if they are flush fitting they are usually ex panel vans, if they are rebated (like mine) ex micro bus, i'm not aware of a metal panel you could buy to re convert alhough you could either get the glass tinted real dark or remove the rubber and cut a piece of metal and re fit it with the rubber or indeed weld it in......someone will correct me if this is not the case. Post some pics up if you can.Rick.

.....now you got every one talking about it I find my self drawn in and intrigued with your plans

  11. Not too sure why you would do this??!!!!

I would just look for a panelled bootlid on ebay etc and do not sell or chuck your old one so you can stick it back on!

  12. Hi All thank you for all your replies awsome, i saw a pic on the net with the back rear windows panelled up so just thought looked cool really, however totally open to ideas.

I have today stripped out interior to look for nasty rust patches etc, pleased to say havent found 1 apart from slight sill on underside sliding door and a rough lower door repair - otherwise looks sweet as a nut - im amazed, i have viewed many to buy in the past seeing the usual jacking points , the front screen corner, battery trays and door steps rusted through - this doesnt have any - it does have a couple of panel dings but nothing drastic. The roof is imaculate guttering perfect and roof in good shape too.

Anyway enough about panels etc, i have just got a photobucket account for all those wanting to see what shes like so heres the link - hope ive done this ok .

  14. Cheers Ricky £1500 - from what i saw looking at others i think i got moneys worth. Loads of ideas but think im going to go to VW show this weekend and see what ideas i pick up from there before drastic action - has anyone got any ideas of a respray cost ? Roughly ? is it best to re spray before getting engine done ?

how long is a piece of string....resprays depend on how much work you put into it......i'd leave it and buff it up if it's original it's the latest thing - original paint once gone can't be got back.......

  16. Welcome M8, post some pics of your bus, it sounds great. ;)
