While that is true, pressure is our only measurable indicator? I certainly ran out with my foot down on a motorway hill having set a "safe for the float valves" pressure. Knowing what the idle pressure was and being able to turn it up 0.5psi was helpful as I still knew it was at what should be an acceptable pressure for the float valves at idle.
So I talked to the garage today and they confirmed that the engine runs good and is not cutting out when pushed hard up hills. Based on all the expert advice I am picking up the van tomorrow and goeing to run as is until funds available to go for an electric pump set up next year. Thank you all .
I'm slightly confused that you're planning to replace this working pump, next year, when it seems there's nothing wrong with it. As I now understand it, between the pump and your regulator set to 2 psi they observed the pressure dropping. They would, because the carb was acting like a tap - the faster it uses petrol, the more the tap opens which relieves the pressure You haven't said (perhaps they didn't tell you or you missed it) what pump pressure dropped from or to? If for example it was dropping from 4psi to 2psi and the van was running ok hard up hills, that's fine. Even if it drops below 2 psi, from their road test it's still fine and I'd bet mine does that too.
Thanks Zedders. I'm going to ask them the same questions tomorow when I pick up theVan. Changing to an Elec fuel pump is only in my wish list for next year. If it's running fine then I'll most likely leave it as is. My most important thing is to get the running temp down which has cost me a small fortune since fitting the new engine and almost 5 years later it's finally at a happy place.
