12v PC fans in Heating System...thoughts??

  1. So I've opened up my PC to clean the dust and crap out of it....and then I saw it.

In my PC I have a few 12v fans that keep the machine cool (and blows dust everywhere). It got me thinking. I have a 2.0lt Type 4 with new heating system front to back. The only thing I dont have installed yet is the blower - have the blower but dont have the riser pipes it attachhes to...

Anyway, I wondered could a 12V PC fan be inserted into the corrugated pipework somewhere to give the heating a bit of extra oomph.

The benefits of this approach as i see it:

    • Cheap!
    • Low draw - 0.01A
    • Doesn't take up room in engine bay like the snail/aux fan would.
    • Can be wire to work when ever engine is running
    • Easily replaceable
So what are the initial thoughts? Anyone tried it before? Any HSE type folks think its a bad idea?

  2. That dont move a high enough volume of air to be of any use

  3. WHS.
However a cheap bilge pump from chandlery does shift enough, costs about £20 and is dead easy to fit into the long pipe under the Bus.
Beware!!! 40 years of carp, dust and dead things will be blown into your face, so don't test it whilst driving along at 60mph. (Ask me how I know)

It'll be like a fart in the wind at a rough guess.

What they are good for is circulating air round the back of the fridge to help the fridge keep cool
