A spacer should be used but most just push the distributor into the hole until it won’t go any further, tighten the clamp and call it done.

I faffed about bending the clamp to hold the distributor in the correct position but a spacer makes it simple. https://www.123ignition.de/123-ignition-en/spacer-ring-123ignition.aspx

I’ve heard of occasional problems with rotor arms and caps but I don’t know of any complete failures – but there probably has been one somewhere.

  3. I think , in a nutshell , they're 100% more reliable than any of the other offerings...
Back to OP , a coil is 25 quid . Even if you go for a 123 it'll still cause problems if the coil is failing so buy a coil first ...

  4. Bit the bullet & ordered one. Last one Holdens had & no more stock till late January. Expecting price rise due to Brexit
Went for the RV rather than the tune+ as the consensus is that the standard curves work fine.
Which curve are people using on std 2.0 type 4? The distributor in at the moment is out of the previous 1800 engine so the part number is probably different.

0 or 9, see which one the engine likes best.

  6. I've got the standard one. The big difference is it now starts everytime Vs the mech. Vac Accuspark I had before.
The extra for Bluetooth besides tuning will give you the immobiliser code feature which might knock a few quid off insurance/piece of mind.

  7. i posted the relevant page from the 123 manual in my build thread, you can look up your oem distributor partnumber and see what they recommend but yes as Geoff says, 0 or 9 for a type 4. I started on 0, now on 9, can't really tell any different but it has been 100% reliable.

  8. Worth turning on double-sparking if you're on curve 0 (curve 2, same as 0?)

Curve 2 is the same as 0 with multi-spark but some rev counters get confused.

  10. Possible, but my VDO works fine. I think the sparks are so close together, the tach filters the double-ness out.

  12. How do you turn double spark on? Is it on some programs & not others.

  13. On the VW ones, turn curve 2 on. It’ll give you curve 0 with double-sparking.

  14. I can’t find any 123 specific for Type 4 2ltr GE engine fitment , or is it the same one as for type 1 engine ?

Curve 2 is the same as 0 but with multi-spark. Curve 3 is also multi-spark and is the same as 2 but optimised for LPG/E85 – I have no idea how it does that.
None of the other inbuilt curves are multi-spark AFAIK.

  16. Have you tried curve 2 Geoff? What are the benefits with multi spark, is combustion improved? I am hopeful it will improve the occasional stumble I still get on idle.

  17. I asked them and apparently the point is to provide some (minimal) improvement in emissions. You get it for free, so might as well turn it on!

I haven’t Graham, I suppose I should but I’m not sure how the old Smiths rev counter would cope with more sparks, it’s only used to some Lucas smoke down the wire to nudge the needle.
