  1. Looking at getting one of these.

Is it worth getting the 'tune' one? How good are they, advantages disadvantages, easy setup?

Anyone have one and could recommended?
    :)

  2. I've heard they are great but only for lawn mower engines ;)

  3. how far away from stock is your engine ?

  4. Right now it's not but in building a 2056
    :)

  6. the tune is definitely more adaptable, but doesn't run any vac advance.....funnily enough i was speaking to the guy who developed the software the other day....he reckons you can factor in the advance you'd see from vac signal, but it would be much less accurate than megajolt/megasquirt as there's no real time reference to actual engine load at the time....I don't know whether you could run a signal from a thottle position sensor, which would be in the ball park, but still not as accurate as MJ....

i've never owned or tried 123 dizzy, but everything i've read about them seems to be very favourable.....they addressed all the issues associated with dizzy fired timing, aside from lash in the drive and shaft itself....i believe the 123 uses a quality bearing and shaft, so it's as good as it gets....MSD would be another option, but I'd be looking into EFI and megasquirt or Emerald if I were building something responsive, fast and frugal

  7. Hi.
If you need a 123 ign, look no more, I have them in stock as I'm the uk agent for the Vw 123s .
Let me know, I use them on nearly all my engines builds where funds allow,
They are a top piece of kit.
    Cheers

So can you explain what more they do on a well timed and set up engine with a standard Electronic dizzy

  9. Thanks, its info im after really, how these stack up against other distributors, what are the benefits of the tune over the other models. Am I going to turn up at the rolling road and are they going to be able to plug in and get the engine tuned perfectly adjusting this? Is it the a 'set and forget' system?
    :)

  10. Hi,
The tune version can be adjusted as you go, it has 2 curves you can set in it, one for all out performance and the other as a lesser curve for economy, I have some literature on it I will try and sort it out, they also have a vacuum take off, they are very well made in Holland, have a look on the website.
    Cheers
    Dan.

  11. I can't explain, sorry , if you happy with what you have good for you, my bug runs great but I wouldn't mind a Porsche.
    Thanks
    Dan.

  12. I'm looking forward to fully testing mine this year :) Dan built me my motor with a 123 and on the small mileage I've done so far all is good

  13. that's not the tune version as far as I'm aware.....they do a VW version with vac advance with a number of pre programmed advance curves to emmulate stock curve profiles from original dizzys.....veer away from stock with your motor and you veer away from the ideal advance curve...
the tune version enables you to tweek the curve via a laptop, so will be more applicable for non standard cam duration...but to my knowledge, the 'Tune' doesn't have a vac facility.....
Unless you can specify a vac dizzy with the tune module??? I didn't get this impression from the tech

http://www.123ignition.nl/id/19.html VW specific (vac or no vac)
    http://www.123ignition.nl/id/50.html Generic software tuneable
    http://www.autosportlabs.com/product/megajolte/ 3d mappable crank fired
http://www.nodiz.co.uk/ non Edis based 3d mappable....too early to say but looks promising
http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Mallory-Distributor-Unilite-with-Vacuum-Advance-p/4754101.htm MSD optical pick up, bullet proof but not mappable

plenty of others like Emerald etc, but all the above are around the same price

if i was swapping a stock dizzy for a better unit on a stock engine I'd choose Mallory, as you're on familiar ground, but with a far superior unit....if you're keen to tweek the curve to suit YOUR engine (not something similar) then I'd go Megajolt (but involves trigger wheels etc). I think the 123 tune is a compromize...easy install, easy programming, but not truly versatile

Good to see how the Nodiz progresses.....easy peasy install.

Would be great for one of the 'big boys' to do a back to back/comparison feature on the above...

  14. Yes the tune does have a take off, we have fitted 3 one on a T4 motor, yes you can put the curve in, the 123-r-Vw has a dial to set it to a preset curve to match your vehicle .

  15. are you sure?

  16. Right!....I stand corrected...I had a conversation with the guy at 123 about this very issue and he geve me the impression that it was an either or.....the R vw with vac (pre programmed) OR the 'tune' with no vac.....I thought they'd missed a trick!
So....take back what I said before.....the 123 'Tune' will be as flexible as Megajolt,
the 123 R VW would be a good replacement for a stock dizzy on a stock engine...

  17. Yes, if your going to the volksworld show, I will have some with me and some good literature .
It's the build quality I like compared to the US stuff.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

    That's an odd answer.o_O

Having had ye olde timing gun on a few, the timing is always rock solid, without a doubt they do make your bus run smoother than the standard jobbies with or without electonic ignition. I'd have one or something like it if I had the funds spare.
