Phew, got there just in time then.

 

I've been across both by boat and walking. As @Merlin Cat says, when you are on the back of a boat steering, there's only a bit of cast iron and a long drop

 

I walked over it several times with my kids . The railing gap is huge and I had to walk between railings and them as they would easy fit between gaps

 

And narrow barges...
