Does anybody know the end result on that guy who was trying to fit a golf 1.6 diesel into a bay ...can't remember if it was on the forum or it was on U Tube ...he was having a tough time but he was winning , must have been a year ago ?
A 1.6 diesel?....... wouldn't be worth the effort. Ive had a few mk1 golfs and a caddy with the 1.6 engine and they could barely pull themselves along..
There seem to be a few diesel T4s out there I can overtake up hill with a 1641.... I wouldnt bother messing with an engine that might be even more gutless and probably not a lot more economical especially as you may find euro-diesel-hate coming to a big town near you.
Ive not seen a derv conversion for a bay yet that runs cool enough and provides a lot better fuel economy to warrent the initial cost Id be interested if you do find a build that does though
Fuel wise they are crap.. my caddy ,unladen sitting at 70 ( motorway) used the same financial amount as me 1.8 16v convertible did ( and that went a bit quicker ). Ive seen an irish guy over on a different forum that had a cracking conversion... there's a few over on an american TDI site .. And mines gonna be amazing...............
Did he have coverage on his convertion ,if he did maybe he was the one and i have it wrong being a 1.6
We converted the crew cab to a 1.8 gti engine and without a doubt it was a good move, however not sure there would be much gain in a 1.6 golf engine. If your going to the effort to convert it, may as well do a proper job 20V Turbo next
I couldn't agree more with the last bit^. If you're going to go to the trouble surely you want to feel some improvement, not just a different smell. On that score I bought an a/c engine from someone who'd converted to diesel and TBH their whole van stank of diesel. Not good!
mate done his used engine from an audi a4 he used the 5 speed gear box cutting of the bell housing spinning it 360 degress and rewelding it , it goes like hell his name is dave whetley in armagh in n ireland
I don't know if it's just me but I think that these vans are built air cooled so should stay air cooled I'm with zed on I would rather have a bigger air cooled engine than change so much of the van
It was 'rabbitboy' from what I remember a good conversion that'll take a while longer than a weekend!
