What's the best/easiest way to replace a broken one of these as the PO has manged to snap the head off one  quarter light catch.jpg

  2. I second that, but replace PO with GF

Soon to be PGF unless someone provides an easy solution!

  3. If you're lucky, there's a small roll pin that holds the bobble bit/arm on. Knock that out and swap it for a new one.

PS VWH will sell you a new one. Same as on Beetles, I believe.

    Thanks Snotty
Have bought one from VWH and now have seen the pin so will use your approach.
I wasn't fancying having to start dismantling the original from the glass...
    Cheers:thumbsup:

  5. Should be fine if the bit you can take off is broken, otherwise you have to dismantle the thing from the window, as you say.

Revived the thread as still having a few issues as they say:confused:
The original was from JK not VWH and bought in 2013. It didn't fit when I tried it last week (ahem!) and JK kindly replaced it with a new version as the 2013 batch had been quaranteened apparently.
Has anyone had any problems fitting these?
Photos show hopefully what I mean.
Photo 1 shows from l to r 2013 catch (too long), original broken catch, new 2015 catch. The profiles of the 2103 and original are similar but the 2015 is clearly much thicker and it's that which is stopping it closing.
Photo 2 shows (apart from fingers and thumbs) a comparison between original and 2015 versions and
Photo 3 is a comparison between the two replacements.

Has anyone had any problems fitting the 2015 version as JK say they've sold several and haven't had anyone (except me!) come back with fitting issues.
No criticism of JK as they have been really good in replacing the catch and have offered to refund the cost so I've no gripes with their customer service - thanks Roger but do want to have a catch which fits properly.

  7. I haven't sourced a replacement yet, but my broken one looks like your broken one. So hope this info is helpful.

I think my 1/4 lights came with 2nd hand doors that came from California 13 years ago. Perhaps this is why you are struggling to find a replacement?

Keep the thread posted with how you get on

me neither. The pictures on all the other suppliers look the same so suspect these are all sourced from the same supplier. VWH say theirs is Brazilian so maybe the new models had a slightly different arrangement. I'll try fitting it again - just in case I've missed something obvious.

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Someone on here yesterday was asking for a guestimate for 2 x opening 1/4lights - just the glass/frame/catch without the outer frame. I believe it's doable to swap this entire part without removing the frame from the door, though drilling out the top rivet looks fraught with paint damage possibilities.

Thanks Zed - yes top rivet is too close for comfort - and for me, bound to end in tears:eek:
The casting is probably mazak so the solution may be to file it until it fits and lose the chrome finish (which isn't that visible).
paulcalf what colour is your red as it looks similar to mine?

  11. Flash or flame red if I remember correctly. It's a Vw colour but wasn't used on 70s bay Windows

Thanks. Asked because mine's supposedly Kasan red but it isn't; think someone mixed a paint shade up to what they thought was but it's pretty way out.
