I miss John Peel in the early hours of the morning driving to the Holyhead ferry to visit my wifes relatives in Ireland, playing odd demo tapes back in the late 80s and 90s.
Agreed although i listened to him regularly in the late `70s/early 80`s - lots of crap but a few gems in there Another Peel show in the later years was Home truths on a Saturday morning , no music but his laid back interviewing was something special . The show revolved around folks telling tales of tragedy through to oddball occurances , one particularly funny one was a bloke living on a tiny Scottish island whose dog disappeared every Saturday and returned in the evening , this went on for months ... One day the guy followed his dog who went down to the pier , waited for the weekly ferry across to the next island . On hopped the dog and spent the day wandering around the neighboring island until the ferry came back , picked him up and took him home ... Funniest thing was , the crew knew the dog would be waiting and even gave him a name - priceless
I miss the Friday Rock Show with Tommy Vance. Still, the DAB is always tuned to Planet Rock these days
Home truths was on r4, I think. Loved it as I was always a peel fan from the 80’s and it was a great Sunday show. I remember the ‘how many beans make five’ debate.
It was time when the whole building site stopped to listen and take the pee out of the whole thing , dear Deidre was for lunch time
I remember first listening to Ivor Cutler on his show , a crazy sing song Scottish poet ...hilarious . Especially Egg Meat .
