gearbox filler plug is solid , I want to give it a good soaking in penetrating fluid - looking for some suggestions if proven products please
Penetrating oil’s unlikely to make any difference. 17mm hex socket on a breaker bar, or a quick squirt with a rattle gun are really the only things that’ll shift it.
^^^ whs get a proper half inch drive allen socket and clean the hole out well first, then put your big boy pants on lol
I had a similar problem with my old car with a siezed gearbox filler plug as well. I found 'Plusgas penetrating oil' solved the problem. I sprayed and left it alone for a day and hey presto it came off very easily.
I reckon rattle gun then , the socket was slightly loose in the plug so I thought rather than going in dry I’d get some moisture in there first
A quick whizz should do the trick. The plugs are on a taper, so they put up a fight if some gorilla’s tightened them up too much.
Try half a heavy up then undooooo ! Or if you have any this is bludee good found in mums garage , dad musta reconded it , I sprayed som on some rusted up bolts n bobs ya uncle round they went
I undid mine and I'm old. Squirted drain and filler plugs with Plus Gas. Leave for a day or two. Clean out the plug heads, use the correct 17mm hex socket and tap it home gently. Then use a 1/2 inch ratchet or bar and tap it clockwise gently as if tightening it. Then go for the anti clockwise undo. I tapped my ratchet handle with a hammer and they came loose easily. Greased the holes and plug threads before tightening them back up. I tightened mine finger tight and then small pressure with the ratchet to nip and check a few times for no leaks, all good.
I'll have a quick look for something I posted about this in a tick but for now I'd suggest a combination of plusgas, a long-ish bar to extend the socket handle .... and using a trolley jack plus the weight of the bus!
If you want a good penetrating oil that dissolves rust try Wurth ultra 2040. Its tons better than such as wd 40
Tried one on @Merlin Cat 's gearbox. Prepped for a fight, cleaned out the 41 year old dirt from the plug and surround. 18 inch breaker bar. Just came undone easily. No chewed plug, with mole grip attack scars like mine, where I was lifting the bus on the breaker bar... Obviously were not done up that tightly as OG fitted.
