Hi All a quick question if i may. Ok so my 1600 79 bay gearbox has been whining for a while now, and i need to change the clutch so I thought it was high time i got it sorted. So the question is what would be my best route to go down. Do I swap for another 1600 gearbox keep my ear to the ground and find a decent second hand one. Or do I get the one i have re coned if so any suggestions where and a rough price maybe? Of is it likely to be easy enough to tackle myself i have never touched a gear box quite happy with most other things mind. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I had to ask the question . Plenty of folk driving around with 30 year-old brown slurry in their 'box...
I would have asked the same question I imagine that is what has been done it has whined ever since i have had it so ill bet the bearings have shot with the crappy old oil.
Now there is a question I will do my best with that one. It is a whine however it does it constantly. In gear out of gear it just get progressively louder as you go faster.
I can help on that one i believe GL4 is the one to go for. Basically fill it right up to the filler hole i think its 3.5l but could be 2.5l one thing to note make sure you can open the filler hole before you open the drain plug crap oil is better that no oil
And don't add any of the molly slip type additives, they can break down at high temps and kill the little copper rings in the gearbox
I filled the 6 rib 091 gearbox in my bay with this: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60148-gulf-gear-ep-heavy-duty-gearbox-oil-80w-90.aspx
One of my old mentors told me...................Engines and Gearboxes are $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.........................Oils Cheap!!! Worked for me in nearly 50 years of motoring.........43 with aircooled VW's. Tony
No, but it's still best practice. If you can't crack it with an 18" bar somethings seriously amiss... Everything undoes with enough determination.
ensure when you buy your oil, mate that at least one container has one of those pop up /out long (approx 6"/150mm )tube, from the lid, you know the type ,you squeeze the container sides so forcing the oil along tube into g/box ,otherwise ,i would envisage a very unfunny time trying to get the oil in to the box.
