does anyone have a pic of theire hook up fitted to the van as i dont want it going through the window,?
I dont have one fitted yet but alot of people if they dont want them on view have the connection fitted in the engine bay.
Mines in the engine bay, great coz its out of the way no wires to trip over and just generally easy to get to x
Several threads on here have pointed out that putting it in the engine bay means the lid will bang on the lea which could cause trouble over time. There is some great guidance on hook ups from Matty here. http://thelatebay.com/index.php?wiki/leisure-electrics-230v-hook-up/
When I had my hook up fitted I suggested the engine bay and was told they would not fit it in there because electricity and petrol do not mix! In the end they put it under the floor.
Mine had it fitted just behind the back wheelarch when i bought it. The backside of the hookup point comes out just behind the rear arch above the battery tray. You can see the hole here (below the spare wheel well). Cable then passes through to gromitted holes through the bulkhead to the ZIG unit under the back seat. Still need to fit RCD as there isn't one.
How is the electricity in your hookup any different from the electricity in the cables all over the engine that creates the spark that makes the petrol go bang which powers your engine?
Could be a question of liability...the owner does the installation its owners risk, non original equiptment installed by others could be their risk even if the owner believes its okay. So they play safe and suggest its sited elsewhere. The risk as far as the installer is concerned is that the "domestic" MCB and any other trips can generate a quick spark if they break under load albeit quickly quenched but within H&S they are not certified for use where combustible vapour is present. The engine bay could be seen as such a hazardous area therefore a third party installer would be chary about doing it. Under normal circumstances ie no tank breathers venting in the bay or leaky carb spindles then the only vapour would be going where it should..the cylinders. However when the vehicle is stationary the tank fumes are not drawn into the air filter by the vacuum they waft out the air box inlet into the engine bay...noticeable on a hot day. Having said all that
