Noticed you are removing the engine on the street. Have you got a garage or shed to work in to do the strip down & rebuild? It’s not something you want to do in the open. Too much dust etc in the air. You need to keep it clean when you split the case.
I did one on the dining room table but all the parts were clean before they were allowed in from the kitchen.
If you’re going to get a jack get one of these motorcycle lift type, much more stable than a trolley jack for dropping engines! And you can move it around on it and use it as a work stand.
To do work on the engine I will be doing it in my front room, the only issue in facing is getting it into the room in the first place haha
Always fancied one of those but not much cop for jacking up the van to fix the brakes? If I had to choose one or the other the trolley jack would win.
Who knows? Better the devil you know? Or maybe not? Could be some bargains to be had as people try and turn their spare things into cash. Though VW didn't make a Type-4 1900, so hmmm... I will admit balancing a type-4 on a trolley jack in the gutter of a cambered road will be precarious. I'd be looking for an assistant to at least stop it falling off. A sheet of ply for the jack to run on also helps pull it out from under. Maybe Dunc's right and the motorcycle one is the way to go.
So after a 2 hour round trip I finally have a motorbike lifter let day 3 commence. I would just to say again thank you for all the support and if anyone from here needs to borrow ramps or the lifter you are more than welcome. Collection only tho haha
3 choices engine and box together. pivot engine and box on box front mount, pull off engine, box back up. wangle engine off box leaving box where it is. What's your plan? We may be able to advise what NOT to do in the process. In your situation I'd go for the last one BTW.
1st step of my plan is to eat some nice hot rolls. Then I guess carry on stripping and then muster up the courage to drop it
Take off the coil and bracket if you haven't done already, and the top plastic part of the oil filler. Stuff something in the filler to keep the dust out because it's going to be shaving the underseal off the inside of the rear valance. Cables still on your heater box controls? 3 tins off the rear?The accelerator cable might hang up as you pull it out. Because the rear is in the air you'll have to inch the jack up as you pull the engine back until it's clear of the shaft sticking out of the gearbox. At that point the fan housing will be hitting the rear bodywork, the end of the shaft will be JUST out of the flywheel but still be within the clutch spring teeth. When you lower it down remember that and tilt, wangle or whatever trying not to hurt the clutch springs or shaft. Can't think of anything else.
