I don’t but probably should. Bear in mind the bearing might be tight and to get both halves exactly the same could be tricky.
I think the hitting the ends of the cam to "bed" them technique is as close as gets as long as there's the right float. One half is like the fourth leg on a chair... never actually touching just there as spare capacity. Really not sure why some threads show people putting a tang on them though, surel6 the shoulders hold it in place? Perhaps the good folk of STF will let me know.... Because the plain bearing has the tang, the thrust doesn’t so if you don’t add the tang when you double thrust there is nothing to locate the bearing (radially not axially).

It’s more of an assembly issue, the oil holes must line up but the tang also makes it impossible, or near impossible for the bearing to rotate, although the interference fit in the case prevents rotation once assembled.
This seems like a great idea in theory but it also makes me think of all the ways I could get it wrong. And since I am building a basically stock engine I have to consider the rewards and potential risks.
I would also worry about the thrust surfaces of the bearings halves being flush with one another which I guess you would only know with the cam torqued in the case and checking it by feel when rotating the cam or checking gear runout...maybe I’m overthinking it.
I'm in the process of installing double thrust camshaft bearings, I thought it was a simple install......wrong. Read that a couple of times now, thought it just sounded more complicated that it really is but if your having issues too.. I'm going to give the waterboxer thrust bearing a go so hopefully already profiled to be a pair and flanges won't kiss and buckle.... and has a tang installed already so I won't habe to ruin a set with my cack handed hammering ability. I have tangs on both sides. I had the touching flanges and had to remove some material, I also had some of the issues highlighted in the link above regarding full bearing contact with the camshaft. It takes a lot of trial and error working, case open case closed case open case closed etc. Im going to blue the camshaft face to check surface area contact with the bearings. It has always rotated very smoothly (after th eclearances were adjusted) and stays put when the crankshaft is rotated. Its just surface area contact between shaft and thrust bearing faces I need to check. PS, I used one half with a tang from another set to make a pair.
That’s interesting; all the cam bearing sets I’ve seen have the tang in non-thrust half shell. Who manufactured the bearings?
How are the thrust faces on the C35? My C25 needed a bit of dressing. And could you do me a favour and measure the distance between the cam thrust faces please.
I’m working on a standard cam at the moment. Yes I’ll measure the distance between faces C35 Silverline bearings, these came recommended from a few (2) VWAC engine builders on YouTube. They build engines for others mainly T1 I think.
You’ll probably find the axial clearance is tight on the Scat cam, I had to remove quite a lot from the bearing. I use Silverline too (they’re good) but the tang was in the non-thrust half on the ones I’ve used, like these.
The part number on the box refers to the bearings that are still sealed. They do not come with time on the thrust half bearing. The two other bearings I think came as a set (I think) I’ll look back to see if I can find a part number.
The part number on the box is standard single thrust cam bearing for a Type 4, same as the ones I use. Thanks for the dimensions, I’ll compare it to a used C25 I have.
The photo for 160VG0025 on GSF shows single thrust but on Vee Wee it shows it as double thrust and currently cheaper.
Gone for a combination of these .. wbx set for thrust and stock type 4 for the rest.. only had Mahle double thrust so have a set of matching standard to replace the single thrust set of Silverlive that I started using... they can be spare.. Quick case mod witha dremel bit.. Torqed up 18 then 23 ftlb some bashing on the ends with a big hammer and spins nicely though can't measure float yet Sent from my SM-T580 using Tapatalk
