Approaching putting the engine in my bus and I've realised I've got nothing more than a standard oil pressure switch (and standard oil cooler) on my 2056cc type 4 to monitor engine health. Cam burn has been done and engine is ready to run so I don't really want to start drilling into it.
    Do I need worry gauges?

  2. Worth having an oil pressure and oil temp gauge I reckon.

    Any easy fit options Snotty?

  5. Fitting these 2 gauges were the first thing I did after buying my camper in 1996, followed by a volt/ammeter.

  6. Real easy... plug and play almost.. just get the right senders and loads of vdo gauge options out there. Not sure about the adapter you show, couldn't be sure which way it'll end up pointing in the pressure gauge hole , a remote adapter on a bit of hose works better if you want gauge and switch senders separate or a dual sender straight in the hole.. Temp sender in a boss in the oil drain plug or an adapter plate swap for the taco plate.

Two gauges discreetly added under the dash on mine. Oil pressure and temp. The pressure gauge saved the day when I had an oil leak in the summer. I spotted the drop in pressure, bought some oil and got myself to my destination by topping up regularly, then I ordered new parts to be delivered to the camp site. Without the gauge I would have been stuffed.

Just got the same set for another, Audi 80 set I think.. but there are some £20 sets on eBay but don't know what they're like.

Oil pressure and temperature are worth having as is a CHT gauge, all are easy to fit. A dual pressure/warning light sender direct into the crankcase and a temperature sender in the oil pressure relief valve plug or taco plate. Or even a dipstick sender for that ‘afterthought’ look. CHT under #3 plug.

  11. Bit more of a hassle on a type 4 than a type 1, which is easy. See @77 Westy 's post above.

A dual oil pressure/warning light sender replacing the standard switch in a Type 4.

  13. Looks neat but did you have to open out the tin?
I'd not considered using it for temperature as my sender is underneath, but I got one to try and fit the pressure sender without having to cut the tin. It didn't work as it still fouled on the tin.

  17. PS Worth fitting them I reckon if the engine's in good shape. If it's got old, tired bearings - more likely on a type 1 - they're probably best left off. Ignorance is bliss. You really don't want to know what your oil pressure is after a long run

LOL. I’d buy new ones if I could find any that weren’t pink and grey and made from chewing gum.
