Dogs in vans

  1. Has anyone got a great way of keeping a dog restrained in a Bay, but in a way that he can move around a bit and lie down?
I tried blocking mine between the front seats and clipping him into a seat-belt-to-harness strap but he still kept trying to change gear for me.

Take the rug off your fab carpet and he will be hypnotised into submission:)

Have you got lap belts on the back seat?

Dougie has a proper dog seat belt adaptor (from Pets at Home) which is approved, I think, that clips into the buckle and fastens to his collar whilst it allows him some room to move on the seat.

We use to use a dog guard mounted above the rock and roll bed so they stayed above the engine bay but gave up due to the hassle.

Then we tried seatbelt harness but they just got in a mess when we had 2 springers

So we just put there bed in above the engine and trained them to just stay there and they just looked out the back window.

Our 2 year old cocker was a challenge but now he just lies time on the rear seat.

If he can find 2nd consistently I'd not fix something that isn't broken....

Harness onto the lap belt on the back seat, or front seat if i'm flying solo

You do have to have your dog (or Cat :D) restrained in some way.....

  10. Use a dog cage or rear restraining belt. Bear in mind, in an accident or emergency stop, all unrestrained items, children, pets and loose equipment would continue to travel forwards at the crash speed. There have been many instances of this with tragic outcomes.

In a camper its also important to stow away any loose equipment in cupboards or under the bed. Its just common sense.

Good call. Maybe train him up to check the valve clearances, and do a basic service too

  12. I do use that seat belt clip, attached to a harness that he hates, but he gets tangled up in it. Also I worry that if he fell off the bed fidgeting he’d strangle himself before I could stop (roughly two mile stopping distance at 20mph) and get to him.

we clip the lead to a harness and not her collar, there has been occasions where she just hangs around but no fear of strangling,

    similar to this... https://www.orvis.co.uk/p/tru-fit-s...hWpoXwGVQoQyV966Hd08dYswYOKXTrdhoCcOQQAvD_BwE

most of the time the boy is sat next to her so he can sort out any tangling, but she has got better the more we use it:thumbsup:

I took the view that if we hit something that hard to propel a dog from right at the back of the van into the back off our head that it would be the least of our problems

We also have high headrests and put stuff between the seats so he can’t get to the front and interfere with driving.

  18. We have 2 leads attached to the rear seat handles that are long enough to wander a little. They are also long enough for them to get out the slider to sit by the side of the van.
May have to get harnesses as the new puppy is going to be trouble...I just know it.
My older dog did ride shotgun attached to the seat belt...

We keep the small dogs in crates in the back while big Jack wears a harness which is clipped via a lead to the handle shown on your picture so he can sit on the back seat or lie on the floor.

He did my fuel lines for me. Next month I'm sending him on a welding course!

With our cat, I just put up a net behind the seats.
In my case when loose in the bus before netting was used, he got fascinated with the space behind the pedals and my wife had to grab him.

Now he is older he just stays in the cat carrier even if the carrier door is open.
