I spent 7yrs working down the mine. Unlike a lot of other mines in the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire area the one I worked at harvested coal from thin seams so used a machine on the coal face called a trepanner and not a shearer that the bigger coal faces did.

Spending countless hours crawling along the coal faces on my hands and knees with a belt on that held a battery for the cap lamp, a self rescuer, 2 adjustable spanner’s, a pair of pliers, a large flat blade screwdriver, a small pouch containing several sockets and a ratchet (which would all eventually gather under the belly) was not fun in anyway.

Riding the conveyors could be interesting depending if someone from the outgoing shift had decided to empty their bowels just before the scraper therby smearing it all along a length of the belt for all to smell......(no joke).

Being on the coal face with the hydraulic chocks/roof supports advancing, (so leaving the void behind where the coal was) could also be an experience as the ‘roof’ would not always collapse in straight away and sometimes it was several metres before it did and when it did it went with a loud noise forcing the air out. Some coal faces were really hot places to work and others were like working in a continual heavy rainstorm as the water ran in from the roof.

I really wouldn’t want to have to go back to doing it again.

I definitely didn't look like easy work. I think even if you were just down there for the length of a shift not doing that much graft it would be a horrible environment. Someone in our group asked about where you went to the loo - the guy said that they went 'anywhere' and that he wasn't going to go into detail as there were 'ladies and chidlren' present :)

I'm not surprised that you wouldn't want to go back.

Sadly the mutt had a stroke early this morning, yep dogs can have them too. He’s got some pills from the vet to hopefully get a bit of extra blood to his brain, and he was a bit better this evening. He’s gone to live with my folks now as they can be with him all the time, where I can’t. I’m hoping desperately for a minor canine miracle, but currently feeling a bit broken

    Ah thanks guys
It's a tough one. Bloody animals. He did seem better when I went round to visit (and got my supper cooked - so not all bad!), and I'll go round before work tomorrow. I'm obviously trying to avoid using my rose tinted spectacles, but as long as he's not in any pain.... we'll see.

  16. don't listen to @Jack Tatty (though there was a group made up of auf wiedersehen pet actors, i think:thinking:)
flying pickets were picketing miners (in this instance) from other pits travelling to come out in solidarity with other pits in different areas.

  17. Beware there are different sorts of English on here so answers can confuse , someeven have picket fencing and are flying objects over them

I think you mean the empi branded picket fencing, that usually gets thrown over someone's fence.
