I seriously don’t remember, I must of been passed out. At least I now know X Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ah look, thank you for taking the time... at least I now have a reference point, and it opens up another avenue for finding a part; very much appreciated. I can't get to take mine apart and look at the part number until the weekend, but if the newer paper filter style or the beetle style have the same control valve, it would make the search wider. There's quite a few on ebay, but as it's only really a working thermostat valve that I need, messaging sellers and asking them to suck on both pipes isn't getting me hugely far. (I can't believe I just typed that ) @Flakey, I think it's the pipe over the bulbous end that is supposed to stick your tongue to it when you give it a good suck (can't believe I just typed that either ) but I don't know about the other one. @paul2590 blimey, there are a lot of oil baths on that sight, but it all seems to be American? Thank you all for helping.
It seems I can suck and blow happily on either pipe now does that mean it’s knackered or does it have to be 30degrees or something?
So it looks like the temperature control valve in my oil bath is the same as the one in @paradox later style one with the paper filter , so not sure if a Beetle one would work or not. Can’t see any immediate reason for it not holding a vacuum (no cracks etc that I can see) and the little ball bearing inside moves up and down when I suck on the pipe - but it just doesn’t do a good enough job of shutting the valve (if this is what it is supposed to do ??) Ho hum. Unsurprisingly none of the eBay sellers have replied to my question about vacuums and requests for pipe sucking
The key bit is that whatever leaves your mouth exits via the other spigot and does not leak out from the body of the valve en route. So blocking the other hole results in no flow and unblocking the hole results in flow. If you stick it under your arm pit that should warm it up enough to shut ...eventually... Cues visions of somebody going blue in the face with a tube going into their armpit which is making strange Benny Hill or music hall act noises.
Take it into the parts dept at a local vw dealership You may land lucky and they still have some in the stock system
Actually where I got mine from years ago. They were also used on Golfs, Polos and the like. Likely to be pricey. Get a spring clip for it while you’re there.
I think we’ve established exactly how much sucking and blowing is required Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
So I think all the ebay sellers that I messaged have now replied, and all barring one who said he'd look and then never got back to me, they've all answered with variations on a theme of "I don't know" (most likely followed by "And I don't care") So short of buying various oil baths and hoping that one of them might possibly have a working thermo valve, I'm no further forward and will most likely have to either wait for VWH to get the new style one back in stock, or start phoning VW garages. @davidoft any chance you might look in your vast collection of spare parts please.
Bad timing unfortunately, I'm in Cornwall for the weekend. Thanks for the thought though Paul, do you know if there's any more planned or is it just one?
