Thanks for the reply Sarah, i've got techenders in the diary  although mine should be a later paper filter, they should work in a similar fashion !

Thermostate.jpg I've ordered one of these for my oil bath from Russ Keller in the USA. It's an adapted Volvo part. rkeller@waterreclaim.com
Not cheap as postage cranks up the price a bit . the part on it's own is available if anyone fancies the DIY route.

  4. Hi Folks ................ADVICE REQUIRED PLEASE???

I've just managed to find a Thermo Valve thingy at the Slough Swapmeet (at Newbury strangely) but had to buy the old beetle paper air filter it was in (only £12 so a bargain anyway).
My 1973 bus has the original large Oil Bath Air Cleaner but the two holes that the thermo valve thingy hose spiggots went through were sealed up (& the hose from the carb was blanked off).

I'm now looking to fit my new thermo valve thingy but I've no idea which way round it should go in the air cleaner (i.e. should the plastic hose spiggot or the metal hose spiggot be on the outside or does it not matter?). Also, does anyone know how it hoses up (i.e. does the hose from the carb go to the plastic or metal spiggot on the thermo valve thingy? I'm then assuming that the hose from the other round thingy underneath the air inlet goes to the other spiggot?)

    Any advise much appreciated

    Cheers
    Rich

There is supposed to be a right way around. The idea of the valve is to snap shut at 30 deg C like on top of a hot radiator.
One way round the vacuum will help hold it shut firmly and the other it may slightly hold it open. This thread from 2008 on the Samba may help https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=279958&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

The price mentioned is only £31 ...back then

Brass end to vacuum operated flap.
I just checked there is a reference in the Bentley VW manual Fuel System P.27 end of section 6.

I've got one on order from VWH although it's not the correct part number I'm going to give it a try. The correct part number is no longer available. I'll update in the morning with the part numbers as it's on my desk at work

I think you’ve probably ordered the same part as I did (like you say, wrong part number but is the right part) It fits and seems to do what it ought. With mine, I’m just not sure the actual oil bath air cleaner is doing its job and whether all it’s flaps and levers open and close appropriately. I’m rather pleased other folk have decided to go down the original air cleaner route as I might actually get to see a properly working one and compare it to mine :)

this is the info i found....
original valve is - 113 129 828 A , according to VW main dealer and VW Heritage this is no longer available...
Ive ordered 113 129 828 D from VW Heritage on its way i believe (this is listed to fit different models a polo and an Audi 80 i think so will be interesting to see if it works)
and the clip is 113 129 830 (this is on back order)
for both parts it was £27.24 so worth a try i think

  10. Hi Folks,

The one used one I've got is 113 129 828 A but still not managed to figure out how to test it yet.
Just to add to the confusion, there is also 035 129 630b, which again is the same part but I think these were fitted on models after 1984.
I found 035 129 630b on VW Heritage at £83.50 but its showing as 'no longer available' (as attached) .............. I can't find 113 129 828 A or D on VW Heritage -- how are you searching for this (just in case my swap meet find ends up being a dudd ?

  11. Apologies for being a bit thick but, am I right in thinking then that the brass pipe on the thermo valve should be hosed up to the round vacuum thingy on the air cleaner intake shown here? WP_20191115_15_51_44_Pro.jpg

  13. And the plastic pipe on the thermo valve should be connected to the pipe at the front of the carb, shown on the picture with a short piece of hose with a blank in it? WP_20191115_15_52_14_Pro.jpg

  14. AH OK thanks, if mine doesnt work then, I'll give them a ring and invest in a new one (if I can ever figure out how to fit the godamn thing LOL!!)

The flap should thump open if you suck on a pipe attached to the spigot. And it shouldnt leak.

Mine was OK when I first had the bus but it broke / smashed with the massive suction (about 700mb vacuum) when I connected it to the manifold vacuum on my progressive carb. So I made up a scissors spring out of stainless welding wire to connect the flap to the plunger coming out of the vacuum capsule. So now instead of thumping open and breaking, it opens the flap then continues down another 5mm before stopping hard.

The flap part on the paper filter and the oil bath are essentially the same.

  19. OK Thanks -- I have a 73 Bay and it has the large metal Oil Bath Filter and I'd like to keep it as stock as I can with everything connected ;-)

That's my plan too. Although mines the later plastic type. But I believe the valves are the same
