Stuck on the A49..... plodding along nicely then engine died no power if you put your foot down. Thought it might be carb jets again so have done them. Now there is fuel coming out of the throttle maybe if something is stuck open. Any ideas ? 1600tp with solex carb Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
home now with a brew..... although still need to sort it, that's next weeks evenings planned it was running fine but then lost all power seemed like no fuel, i cleaned the jets out but still the same, could this be the pump maybe ?
you may have flooded it... sudderly lost power points to electrics ,splutter to a halt ,then fuel....
no ,it should'nt pass the fuel pump(by itself) ,so maybe it flooded ,then plugs got damp ,then no electrics... BUT you have a fuel cut off in the carbe chamber (float),it should have stopped it... edit if it did not stop it then the petrol would flow in the carbe , even when the engine is off ,then past the barrels mix with the oil etc etc i would change the fuel pump been the easy option ,then no extra pressure on the carb btw go test the level of your oil
Ignition may have been on while trying to get it going. But I will check. Put it away when the aa dropped us off and had to get the boy home for a late tea Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
Not sure on the spark. It would run for a few seconds before stopping. Will check Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
If petrol is dribbling out then you have probably an issue with flooding with fuel. If petrol is running out of the throttle spindle then there may be worn bushes too... If it is flooding then the engine may barely run with foot hard on floor. And it will stink of fuel. It will restart maybe 20 minutes later and die and so on. Check the needle valve feeding the float chamber for dirt or wear - most likely a piece of dirt although mine failed and flooded the engine through wear in the needle valve and I managed a mile before it died...
You said 'thought it might be carb jets again' so you were having problems before the breakdown? This type of breakdown seems to be happening a lot lately going by the recent threads on the subject. As said, its likely going to be either fuel, lack of or flooding, or ignition electrics. Be methodical, check out the fuel system and take top off the carb to see if fuel in there and check float and needle valve. Is the fuel filter clean and clear or full of dirt? The throttle spindles do leak, mine did. Fuel pump may have failed, so need to check if its delivering fuel, hose into a jam jar. The point about the mechanical pump, I found same as you, the fuel siphoned through it as no non return valve on the pump. Maybe the earlier pumps had such a shut off valve. I don't know. But mine didn't. Good to check the oil as there may be fuel in it, so must be changed as the oil would be useless, also happened to me. Let us know how you get on.
For anyone braking down ,it is good to take a spare spark plug with you ,the vehicle has stopped ,undo a lead ,place the plug on lead ,make sure the plug is touching the engine (earth) ,turn the key ,if you see a spark then you can not blame the electrical system.... Basic fault finding... I have never broke down not knowing why....
@lost-en-france how long are your arms ? I didn't fancy going to deep on the side of a busy road. besides it will give me something to do tonight after work
yes @mgbman i had a problem with the van last weekend, cleaned out all the jets and away she went. i think what i have done on the side of the road when i took the top off the carb it must have let the float stick down, as there was no fuel about when it first stopped, will be looking at it tonight and update. thanks all for your help
Update..... took the plugs out to find both left hand plugs wet with fuel, so unplugged the coil and turned it over on the key to blow out any fuel from the chambers (the fuel pipe was left off due to the float been stuck down) then cleaned and replaced the plugs put the coil lead back on, she fired up straight away and ran until the fuel ran out in the carb i took the top off the carb checked the valve on the top and lifted the float out to check, all seems fine checked the fuel pump with a jam jar, seems to pump plenty in put it all back together, using the fuel in the jam jar to fill the carb so i knew the float was working it started and ran ok, only thing i noticed that the hot air pipes that go up to the carb. left one was hot to touch the other was warm but certainly not as hot as the left side...... im thinking maybe carb icing ? any thoughts @lost-en-france @mgbman 1600 twin port, single solex carb
