So crank won't turn so can't get at pistons to take them off, they're almost at full 'in' position.... cant get to pins inside case.... tried splitting the case a bit to free crank but still won't spin, guess the dowels are doing their job...don't want to hammer the crank round and damage dowel holes.. any ideas out there for me to try tonight ...?
Softish hide mallet going round the case diagonally, try tapping it not gently but not that hard the case smashes. It may take a few sharp blows but patience is key!
All cylinders off ...case split, though there were a few issues last night until I found that nut under all the crud in the bottom of the side. . pulls apart about 1/4 inch until case hits piston skirts (1 &3) ..crank still won't move..con rods move though... guess I'll have to split as far as I can and see if there is enough space to get dowels out of their holes and try spinning again?
This maybe ^^^ I checked 10 times and was sure.... but there was a cheeky little number hiding away....
No, case is coming apart ok... I did have a cheeky little bolt too but no longer the problem.. Case doesn't fit over pistons and can't move pistons out to remove them... Going to get changed and get the stilsons out...
Must have been another thread I advised recently against splitting the case without removing the pistons...
I know. .twas me... But I couldn't get them to move out to knock the pins out.... so 8 went in after them...
The trouble is that as you split the case, followers, bearing shells and the like fall out and jam here and there... oh, you know that...
Do now.. followers out of the way shells stuck onto crank but even with a big gap around crank and balancing on flywheel still won't spin case around the crank.. still saw next!
6 months ago I destroyed a 1700 engine for the sake of a bearing dowel pin. I lump hammered the pots off but left the pistons on just like you did. Eventually I had my bearing dowel. Next day I found one in the plastic tray bit between the seats in the car.
I think the previous owner tried a new and novel approach of keeping the oil on the outside of the case
My £51 ebay one outside looked like that on the outside.. but inside the pool of water had only dissolved the bottom of the cam gear.No rust above the water. yours looks like the rain had a go further up... Your challenge is to reuse the case and crank...
Got a crank from my Type 4 syndrome case this one could do with a bit of a clean!... But winning slowly... case pulled open enough to spin it around to the siezed no 3 con rod.. found out why it wouldn't move and pushed case back together and can get at gudgeon pins now. Camshaft fell out in the process.. that helped too... taking the backs off the con rods was a no go... They rounded off in the spanner! Oh the joys of type 4 rebuilding... Might go back to fly fishing for a hobby...
