Which ignition setup?

  1. Electric

    75.0%
  2. Traditional points

    25.0%
  1. After a weekend of tinkering and £800 lighter on bits a bobs I was informed that I should get electric ignition as it was far superior. Now I was under the impression that points were better and more reliable. Not one to take the word of one person I put it out to guys and girls.

What do you use or would rather use? And what is your reasoning?

  2. I've had both. Points require maintenance now and then where electronic ignition is pretty much maintenance free. But be warned, I shorted out my electronic ignition and it was gonna cost £120 for a new set so I ripped them out and put points in for under a tenner. Nothing wrong with points and there what came with the bus

  3. Electronic. Close the thread now.

Quick before he closes it

As much as l use to LOVE the tinkering with points and condensor and having had several cars with them fail and fixing them on the road side l was always still a fan. That was until l fitted an Accuspark SVDA electronic unit into my bus. WOW!!! Mid range was greatly improved and notably so too.

  5. Fit a 123 dissy, and you'll be toned, muscular and handsome...:)

  6. Ok it seems the electronic is only for 009 dizzys unless I go Malory or pertronics etc.

Seems I've done all the cheap upgrades. Everything else I want to do is £500 a pop. Lol

  7. If you're handy with a soldering iron (or know someone who is). the little Velleman kits are fine. They trigger of the breakers, so you keep those, but still switch the coil electronically. About £20 I think.

Another poss is to track down an old Sparkrite box. I used one for years.

  8. I don't mind the outlay. I need to suss out what dizzy I have I guess. So far it seems I understood wrong and electric is the way forward

  9. As I understand it, electronic ignition of mostly any brand will give you a more accurate firing hence, possibly a little better mpg and better response. Problem is, none of them are cheap by any means and they can go wrong. There are differing schools of thought here in the fact that you can buy an awefull lot of points and condensors for the same price as a good electronic set up. If your electronic set up goes wrong on the road, it's the breakdown truck and shelling out again. If you carry a spare set of points and a condensor............
    Horses for courses.

  10. im gunna stick with my points mate! im happy with it, and have a lot of mates that have had to shell out more than once after their leccy stuffs gone pop.

  12. Lol. Never say your bus is fine. It'll go wrong quicker than you've finished your sentence. I never answer when people ask how my bus is doing.

  13. Yeah I know that's why I'm hoping to negate it by saying I'm doomed lol

  14. I have electronic ignition but carry the points set up just in case. Changed over from electronic to points at the side of the road once as I had a bad misfire. Turned out to be a plug lead breaking down.
