Of driving a vw camper van?
Mine was in 1996, driving back from a rave, at Golddiggers, Chippenham. My mate was ‘unable’ to drive, after too many ‘consumables’.
Absolutely loved driving it, had to have one!
    Had one ever since!

    When was your first time?

Driving home from buying it, so many people waving and flashing their lights I had to stop and check nothing was falling off. I had no idea people waved and flashed their lights at old VWs.

Ha, same... couldn't work out why people were flashing their lights and waving - I checked everything, and nothing looked wrong with it! :D

Mine was after buying it from Shrewsbury in 2009, not being able to work the heater controls so had cold air blasting at me. Had to pull in a layby on the Wrexham bypass after smelling a burnt clutch smell. Turned out to be a front brake disc glowing red! o_O

  6. I hired a brand new Brazilian and took off with my wife who was pregnant with our first child for a week's camping in Devon. Loved it so much I sold my beloved first car, an Austin Healey Sprite mk IV, and bought the tatty bus that a guy I played cricket with wanted to get rid of. The idea of a classic that our new family could all enjoy was, and still is, a massive source of pleasure.

First time was in a rented yellow tin top early about 20+ years ago. It was hired from a company called “100% Slow” near Newark if I remember correctly. Had it for a week and ended up at the Tatton Park event, VW North West. It was a lot of fun, and a gorgeous little camper. Always had a soft spot for tin tops since then

  8. Bought Tilly from a lady in Cheshunt loved her when I first saw her,Tilly that is, drove her back to Cambridgeshire and had an affair with her ever since, Tilly that is.
She has been the star in a family wedding and draws admiring glances wherever she goes. Given me pleasure and hope this love affair last for a lot longer than my marriage.

I bought my mates 72 as it had failed the mot on a battery tray. Gave him £50 for it in 1988.. drove it home sheepishly down b roads with no mot, thinking what a bag of Marmitee it was. To be fair, it was better than many of the things that sell for £10K on eBay these days..

2009, our van wasn't finished, so hired an e ar ley with a Dormobile roof to tour Scotland...picked it up near Loch Lomond and had to drive it back through Glasgow to Gretna....was rush hour and using the gearbox for the first time was "an experience " .... think that's why I now have an automatic.

Hired one called Miss Scarlet. Picked it up from the hire company and drove it 10 miles to home. Thought OMG that was mental and I really don’t want to drive that to the campsite and take a holiday in it. Anyway ended up loading her up and made it to Hawes in Dales just before dark. During the drive there were flashes of extreme frustration followed by, this is the most pleasurable experience I’ve ever had! (Drivingwise!)

Like a lot of things in life, you get hooked on the good bits - trundling down a gently curving drystone wall road with with sheep in the fields, floating on the suspension and the sun setting into the cab, it was only gonna end one way

  15. Test driving one in the Swiss mountains, with the owner telling me to press harder on the brake as we rolled at increasing speed towards a cross roads, then suddenly "schnell schnell schnell!" as we came to the 20% hill outside his house. Didn't make it up the hill, stopped, into first, and crawled up, with the owner holding the gearstick in first, as otherwise it would pop out. 45,000 he was asking, plus another ca. 8k if we wanted the first gear issue sorted... That's actually not too outlandish for Switzerland. Funnily enough we didn't buy it.

I had it for 9 years from then :)

  18. 1989 , just fancied something a bit different for 'adventures' instead of the soggy tent - a caravan wasn't even considered !!
A friend of a friend was selling his old camper with a years ticket for 400 quid , and the the test drive was memorable in that i was pleasantly surprised how easy it bimbled along on the B roads around Whitby - despite my awful gear selection ....
I drove to a mates garage and he gave the thumbs up so I bought it . Hindsight tells me it was a1968 Devon Tourvette tin top , hand painted but with a lovely original interior , current bird ran up some curtains and off we went that weekend to Wales.
Ran it for 4 years , bought my current one ,went travelling in the current one and on returning swapped the '68 for a carppy Metro as I needed transport for work and the 'current' was decidedly tired after 2 years thrashing around Europe and Turkey.
    Happy care free days ...

  19. 2014 - drove our first and only bus home after buying it - couldn't find 2nd gear and the seat (a black leather Alfa Romeo one) wouldn't adjust for my little legs.

A mate was moving house and asked me to help out by driving his VW to his new address. The experience kind of stayed with me and about 25 years later I scratched the itch.
