Wood above the engine bay ?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Dubbdubb, Apr 15, 2018.

  1. Dynamat stuck to the roof of the engine bay and car sound insulation felt and carpet on top of the load shelf in the back of the van. Makes a huge difference. I also stuck strips of dynamat into the thin hollow on the base of the load shelf in the back of the van.

Saw these on a thread on VZI.

The seller is a young chap based at Goole called Adam (Fly by split)

He may sell the wooden ones separately from the chassis cuts but there are only 2 of the 3 pieces on the cuts.

  3. I've been thinking about using cement board ? Maybe a little heavy but there isn't much especially with holes cut in it ? Just a thought

    I think it might break.
VW used a heavy felt supported by perforated metal sheets. These days you can go on eBay and buy sheets of adhesive aluminised heavy foam like Noisekiller only cheaper and not maybe quite as good .. Why spoil your bus with a bodge for a few quid?

You are trying to dampen down vibrations as well as block sound. Unless you can thoroughly bond your cement board to the metal it is not necessarily justifying the effort taken to fit it. It may end up rattling around and feeding your engine cement dust into its air intake...

  6. Good point mate .I was just thinking something that wouldnt' be flammble. I'e since spoken to my mate who can get me some sheet stainless steel or ally laser cut so think I will go down that route . I'e put a sound deadening product on the top inside the bus so will probably just put the original insulation back up and then the tins I have made . It's not a cost thing I was just stuck for what to do . My bus came with a wooden / hardboard set up there which were original but all breaking into pieces . I bought a set of tin ones off eBay for £50 only to find when I got them home they don' fit my bus lol. There still in the garage somewhere

  7. There’s little chance of them catching fire. If your engine compartments getting hot enough to ignite hardboard, you’ve got more serious problems ;)...

  8. Ok I see I cant' win here lol. Im' just a born worry'er . I would of course have a fire extinuisher fitted anyway but still don' like the thought of wood fuel and electrics lol

  9. If your fuel lines are fine, you don’t need a fire extinguisher ;)
