My bus wont tickover. It was fine then all of a sudden he wont tickover. Checked timing is okay. Cleaned pilot jet. Checked plugs, leads etc etc. Cant fathom why he would just lose idling all of a sudden. Any suggestions?
Wire/connection to fuel cut-off solenoid on carb. Assuming you have solex carb(s). ...or poop in the idle jet.
12v from coil to choke and solenoid chained up any old how will work. test solenoid - ignition on, pull the wire and dab it back on, you will here it click. Poop in the idle jet - look in past the choke, brass nut with screwdriver slot. unscrew, blow through with air/carb cleaner/gas lighter refiller - whatever you have, put back - easy.
Yep it clicks ok. I note it ticks over whilst still on choke but once choke drops tickover dies. I did blow thru pilot jet and it seems clean. I put the solonoid on a permanent live on the battery. I dont think its that. I am baffled.
If it goes on choke, when it warms up either it's not getting enough petrol, or it's getting too much air. You can judge which as follows: Remove air cleaner from carb get some cardboard start van and warm up so choke is off. Keep it from stalling by using the throttle in the engine bay cover the throat with your cardboard gradually - start at half? You will get to a point where prob most (80%) of the carb throat is covered and it ticks over. Now - either you have a MASSIVE air leak so look for splits in manifold boots, servo vac hose come off manifold, or split (if you have one), inlet manifold loose. Unlikely IMO. You have fuel starvation - back to cleaning the carb - you're getting plenty petrol to the carb or it wouldn't run/drive. Possibly the blockage is internal rather than the jet itself. More likely IMO. This can be infuriating - I spent nearly all day cleaning and re-cleaning my carb when I got the bus after doing the above. Eventually I got it going using hectic carb/manifold cleaner. It's still not right, but 90% there. If the carb has petrol and there isn't an air leak it must be carb internals. Reason it goes on choke is petrol is sucked harder thriough the carb as the choke tube is blocked by the choke flap. When choke comes off it sucks air instead.
Your trick with the lighter refiller did the trick. i blew thru it several times and thought it clear. But i did it with the lighter fuel thing, put it back in and now hes fine. As if nothing ever happened. I am going to give you double K zed. In fact i'd invite you out to dinner if i was a bird.
