I am no electrician ...but i am trying to sort out the wires on this Cali import its a bit of a mess under the glove compartment which has now disintegrated ...and making it easier to view everything . However there is two wires which are green which are joined together coming from a block which have a sleeve saying ....Rear LCH and another coming from the same block but Purple 2 off with a sleeve saying Rear RCH . Are these some thing to do with a radio speaker wires ?
Most likely speaker wires - Green and purple are for rear channels, white and grey for fronts - 2 of each, one with a black trace
Get a 1.5 volt battery, tap the two cores of each 2 way cable on it and see if you can hear crackling noises from a speaker in the back of the bus..
I will try that Mike ...speakers ( Battered ) are in the doors . Just taken the lenses of the rear lights , soon as you touch the lamp body it is as brittle as paper . Probably the hot weather of Carlsbad California where it seems to had all the servicing done up to 98 thou miles in the service book . Next job to buy a new 12 v battery and see what works .
Another Question chaps . The Cali bay i have was a F.I . but long gone ,i have fitted a 17.oo type 4 into it came with it . I assume the FI fuel pump will not be compatible with the engine now in . Will the two wires that went to the fuel pump be fine to fit to a fuel pump that i will be getting to fit . Or are there differences further down the line which will upset it. I suppose i could fit a mechanical pump which seems to be cheaper .
IIRC those two wires are better than what you'd probably rig up yourself. One should be from the starter spade so it pumps while you're turning it over. The other should provide running power to the pump though without the fi stuff ... you should trace those wires. The one that isn't from the starter might not work without jiggery pokery, best is a relay so it operates while the alternator is running.
What I did with mine was have relays on both pump feeds, one energised from the starter spade and one from the blue wire on the regulator. One power feed to both relays and one from the relays to the pump. Fink that's right. If you try and use one relay for both, the alternator energising wire would connect to and operate the starter and we don't want that!
Be aware that some of the mechanical fuel pumps currently offered are not great and have a tendency to fall apart. I will supply you with one for free + postage if you want to tinker. Only done 100 miles. It's made by PN in Slovenia. I eventually repaired my original one but in your case you don't have one.
Thankyou for the offer andyv ....there is a fuel pump on the 17.00 and it looks like they have whipped the inlet and outlet pipe connections off and filled them with filler and left it like that instead of fitting a blanking plate ...presuming they must have fitted a electric pump . Its a VW badged one so will clean it up and take a look at it . i don't know if you can buy the inlet and outlet fitments separately or not . I don't know if the fitments on the one you have will fit mine or not . Did you have trouble with the Slovenia one ?
There’s a spindle which passes through the base, but it’s just a knock in fit. Mine was working loose, even the replacement they sent me. You could probably secure it with a nut and bolt. The inlet and outlet pipes are in a slightly different location to the original, but that’s no problem. I don’t think you could swap them to a vw pump though.
