On a very full tank I had petrol coming out of these once... Left the forecourt, onto cambered road tilting left... Lucky escape!

  2. Fireboy extinguisher is now wired into the circuit that supplies the fuel pump and the cut off switch, so if this is triggered it will automatically cut power to the pump (stops fuel being pumped into the engine bay if theres a fire).

I've also tightened the new steering box (again) which had got a bit sloppy, much better now.

Check over before SWMBO goes away in it for a weekend and i had a blow headlight bulb, and only one tail light. Tail was just a dodgy fuse, headlight needed a new bulb - all good now.

I've also fitted a clamp for the leisure battery as it was not secured previously - 9 quid from ebay and easy to fit.

I've also been researching breather stuff - my crankase breather just vents into the engine bay - ordered up some parts so i can plumb this properly into the air filter.

Lots of waxoyling - found several places that were "dry", behind leisure battery, front panel inside the splash pan etc. these now have a liberal coating of the gloopy stuff.

I'd read good things about the butty's bits throttle link - unfortunately simon doesn't make one for the FI late bay so i made up a link myself with some ebay rose joints - fitted this, then decided it was worse than before as the bulk of the thing meant it fouled on the carpet/underlay etc, I didn't want to cut a bigger hole in the flooring so i took it off again, greased up the original link and refitted that. :)

SWMBO and a friend are away in the van this weekend, fingers crossed it'll all be ok. I expect i'll get some phone calls at some point (question this morning - "it is unleaded fuel isn't it?" er.. yes!). As a test i drove the van to work and back one day this week, so 100 mile 'round trip - no issues so i think they should be ok..

400-ish miles completed over the weekend.. pretty good going I think. Only one minor hiccup - hot start issue, so a relay kit has been ordered from heritage to rectify that.

  5. Since i got the bus, my crank case breather had just been venting into the engine bay. I did some research and the recommendation is to have this piped into the top of the air filter. Have i done this right?

here's what it looked like before:

Used some sheathed fuel hose and proper fuel clamps to fit this:

.. into the top of the air filter:

Didn't want to take the risk of anything falling into the carb so i wired this:

Whilst i was at it, i also replaced the missing "T" piece in the fuel tank breather that runs across the front of the engine bay (15A in the diagram).

Some great info on breathers etc here: http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/piping-in-engine-bay-fuel-breather-related.52818/

Next job; fit the hot start relay. :)

That's how I've done mine! I had a little air filter which just went brittle and left oil over the engine!

  11. Hi steve
caddy 16" steels, but don't get excited they don't go straight on - fronts needed the bore enlarging and i narrowed them too, rears i'm running spacers. if i was doing it again i'd look to find an OE vw wheel with 6x16 ET30 or thereabouts.

  12. thanks :)

not much has happened since the last update, just some camping :)

  13. So the summer's over :(

Lots of picnics, camping, trips out, a wedding, a classic car show, several "photo-booth" outings..

The vw got used at every possible opportunity and gets smiles and waves wherever it goes.

Writing this sat at my work desk looking out of the window to dreary October rain.. boo. We're not "sorn-ing" so whenever the opportunity arises it'll get some runs out over the colder months but i fear it's going to be much. Still, it'll give me a chance to re-visit my to-do list and get on with some fettling.

  15. Cheers I knocked this up out of the last piece of lightweight ply I had left over from my interior. The idea is good but I prefer to be able to walk through the walk through as apposed to climbing over. image.png image.jpeg

  16. it's always a quandry this walk thru bit....such a lot of wasted space if you don't have something there, but a pain to climb over when it's occupied. I've yet to see someone make a really good centre console to utilize the space below the handbrake, around the totem, gear stick and walkthru....

  17. yep, that would be a good idea to use that space behind the hand brake. I've seen vans with a storage shelf which goes some way to use this area but it looks messy if its cluttered up with stuff.

tbh the storage box between the seats isn't a problem when you're camping, as it only takes a second to undo the straps and move it out.. ours is only between the seats when we're driving. I have considered putting some additional strap bracket jobbies on the front of the R&R base so it could be securely strapped there too as an alternative - ie between the kiddies legs. that also frees up the space between the seats for me to securely strap the cool box properly. I'll do that at some point.

i took the straps and rubber spacers off my centre box thing and fitted a small hasp and staple to it then used one of those quick release clips through it - like tractor pins you know? in and out in seconds - used to bung it in the awning and use it as a foot stool.... dunno what i'm gonna have in the '5 yet - 1st camp should be interesting as i'll miss some of the habitual things i did... like i had a little sheelf my mobilehad to sit on at night, and a little hook my necklace had to hang on when in bed.... creature of habit me..

  19. no worries nick. when you're ready give me a shout as i think i have a few left overs that you might make use of. i've def got the clippy thing and some piano hinge you can have. i've also got some new black fabric tape to try out - it's to cover the edge of the fabric and the staples in an OGwesty stylee.

did you fit your springs yet? I put mine on the other day - one side works spot on. the other works ok-ish, but manages to conflict with the base when you lift it up to get to the storage underneath - sort of jams at about 15degress up and needs a tweak before the base will drop down again. Needs some fettling i think but i should be able to copy what the other side is doing and hopefully get them both working right.

btw - the spring needs to go OVER the pin otherwise it wont work. not my pic, but this is how it needs to look:
