Window won’t wind up

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by RuthieRoo, Aug 1, 2022.

  1. Hello dear all,
I need your help! My LH window won’t wind all the way up. It’s been a bit dodgy but before when I tightened the handle with allen key it seemed ok for a bit. And now it feels like I can’t get it to engage with whatever the mechanism is inside…any thoughts? Supposed to be driving to near Whitchurch on Tuesday and rain is forecast :(

  2. It sounds take the door panel off jobbo and have a look, could be just a simple fix.....or not, but its not going to up by itself, it could just need a bit alignment and lubricant.

  3. get someone to pull the window up as you wind, then leave it up for your trip.

when you're back pull the door card off and see what's going on - most likely the winder teeth are knackered and a new winder will fix it.

Problem comes if the winder mechanisms are replacements, the splines on the mechanism get worn as the metal handles slip.
If it still slips with the plastic handles, go back to the shiny ones and, glue them on with 5 minute Araldite then do the Allen bolt up tight.
When you want to remove them, loosen the allen bolt until its head is proud of the winder then tap it with a small hammer to break the glue..

  15. And thank you @rob.e and @mikedjames,l and all, when I took the chrome handle off the winder teeth were almost worn smooth, no wonder they weren’t turning anything!

  16. Fit is great, had them on my last 2 vans, no problems at all.
Only found out they fit as have a Reilant Scimitar and they were in the spares box.

  18. You need to make sure the winder mech works smoothly and the glass slides up and down freely. If it does, even the plastic handles work fine. If it doesn't, eventually the winder mech will break, whatever handles you have.
