Wilma, our 74 Bay project

  1. Well I've been putting this off for too long now, some nice weather and lots of encouragement (nagging) from Susan and I've eventually got stuck in to sorting the interior project on our bus.

    Story so far...

We bought Wilma last July as our first van, I was keen to buy as solid a van as I could as I'd learnt from previous ownership of a beetle many moons ago just how bad the rust bug can be once you start digging. So after a bit of searching we found this van that had spent the previous 2 years undergoing a restoration, but within that time the then owners became pregnant with their 4th child so decided the van was to go. We picked up Wilma with the bodywork side of the restoration complete but she was in need of an interior fit out, the previous owner decided best to sell her in this state as a blank canvas, so it was just the van I was looking for.

So below are some pics of the resto she had already gone through and how she looked when she came to us...

  5. The first part of our interior refit when we got her was to get rid of the bench seat that had come from some sort of transit van by the looks of it and replace it with a nice comfy pair of porsch seats and return her to a walkthrough model which she was originally but got converted to a non walkthrough model during the resto.

  6. Then along came winter and nothing happened for several months, that was until yesterday, when the bug started itching and the cover came of for round two.

The areas that needed paint touched up were seen to, and everything was made ready to fit the new flooring, door cards and units, 48 hours later and here are the pics as we went.

  7. So thats where I'm at so far, the next job is to secure the units in place (for anyone curious the units were made by kustom interiors based in Cornwall), then its on to sorting the cab area, and also to install the overhead unit which I'm not looking forward to as I've heard it can be rather fiddley to get it in place and secure it, the 4x4 trolley jack and a long pole will be used here I think.

I'll be back later in the week as things progress.

  8. Looks great keep up the good work.

  12. Thanks everyone, always good to hear all the effort is worthwhile lol

  13. Great van. Good work

  14. Today was another sunny day so once again the cover came off and I carried on with fitting up the interior, today saw the main units being secured in place, then the buddy seat got fitted and secured. Next I moved into the cab area and fitted in the kick panels and the cab door cards, had to cut the openings for the handles and window winder so took my time to ensure i didnt cut more than was needed. Heres the results...

  15. Another days work on our Wilma saw the overhead unit getting fitted in, it required a bit of assistance and a few goes to get the front brackets to sit right but persistance saw it completed. Then the next job was to modify the inside of the unit that sits over the wheel arch to allow access into the lower part for extra storage, I had a feeling this could come in very handy and once complete it doubled the storage capacity of that unit.

    Overhead unit in place.

Chain drilling and jigsawing soon made a hatch into lower area of unit.

The area in lower part of unit, perfect for extra linen or even a spare gas bottle.

  16. Nice work:thumbsup:

  17. Great work there. The van looked good before you started but now it looks the business-well done :)

  18. Looking great fella the interior units are a super choice :) , just as a matter of interest how much did Kustom charge for the units? Thats the kinda thing I am looking for mine.
