Which towbar with vintage speed exhaust?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by WillP, Sep 18, 2020.

  1. Is some kind soul able to tell me which towbar I need?

Our van is an early (registered 01/01/73) late bay, but there seem to be some crossover bits (panels - presumably bodged by previous owners) on the van. So just want to double check I have late bay fixing points, and also whether the late bay towbar (https://www.justkampers.com/towbar-vw-t2-bay-with-standard-exhaust-1972-1979.html) will fit in conjunction with the vintage speed 'T2A sport muffler'?

I dont know what make mine is , but it locates the crossbar of the towbar roughly where the bumper was. It bolts onto the holes where the bumper was, and moves the bumper out one hole further. It sits maybe 1cm lower than the bumper. It might fit above your exhaust, except in the centre where the towbar section is welded on.
This is a single quiet pack stainless exhaust.

The towbar in the Just Kampers link is same as what we have fitted to both our buses, on the '73 it fits fine with the Vintage Speed with the two pipes out of the right hand end.

I'm on my work laptop at the moment and have no images to post up but can do later if you need any to assist!

  4. Hi, pics are always good if it's not too much hassle. Sounds like the exhaust is different to the one I have.

I was going to ask how you are getting on with that exhaust but it looks like you haven't even started the engine yet?

I'm a bit lost, which bus is getting the Subaru?

That's an old photo of Gusbus mate, probably when we first put the type 4 in. Its been fine for five years now, it did have occasional blowing issues which we couldn't trace but it appears to have sorted itself.

The westy is getting the Subaru motor.

Mine is spectacularly noisy at lower revs and accelerating but very quiet cruising. Is that exhaust not a little OTT for your motor? It's the "biggest" one they make? I'm thinking it's too big even for mine which is why I asked. :)

It may be a bit ott but I do like the sound of it, has a nice rumble :D

I think its fine for what I want but that said, it could always be better / improved with exhaust choice (learning after the event so to speak)
