Which leisure battery ... not what oil

That kit looks just fine, although your dyno might struggle to keep both topped up.

 

Don't get me started on Aqua Marina, with her saucy pout.

I knew her brother Morris, y'know.

 

With a dynamo it not really worth it, I doubt it would do anything.

Personally that kit is a lot of money when a normal relay would do for our vans.

The relay works perfectly OK, and then all that is, is a basic 40A automotive relay with some fuses in the wire linking the batteries through the relay contact.
And the coil powered off the alternator warning light connection.
All good until you introduce a mains charger or solar charger, then the VSR additionally allows the solar and or mains battery charger on the LB to automatically charge the starter battery if the bus is parked up with sun or hookup power.

Planning to abuse it when you use it Halfords probably best for returns.

 

I've had batteries from both ... One time the Halfords desk monkey suggested Mega Store as being cheaper!

Mmm my orig Dynamo seems to keep the LB up to speed ok.

 

Depends on the draw obviously but in my 'umble opinion it's better than nowt ...

Bit intrigued about Mikes comments regarding solar or hook-up charging both batteries when using a VSR ????
Surely there's thousands of vans out there using this system without a problem....

It isn't a problem. Iirc it was as a result of us fitting one to Chip many years ago that first highlighted this. Durite relays were sold as one way units but that wasn't the case.
You just need to be aware of it in that sometimes wiring can go live unless it's isolated during battery servicing etc.
In fact it's been a massive benefit to know that once the LB is charged then any excess goes to the starter when parked up.
It doesn't happen often though because mostly the LB is the one being drawn on

 

So it's NOT a problem then Mike , nothing to see , move along , no drama....

It wasn’t saucy though…

 

I think our setup is pretty basic, a few USB ports and the heater. That’s about it for now

Correct , no drama just replace the crude but effective relay with the VSR when needed.

 

Banner batteries have a very good reputation, providing they're not neglected

As I've killed another leisure battery , it's time for a new one. I like.the look if the Yuasa AGM 100ah on refered to earlier but have a question for the cleverer ones amongst us ...

I read that AGM batteries require a specific charger with an AGM profile to maximise the charge to 100% effectively a charge voltage of 14.6 14.8 Volts ..no problem other than I doubt my maypole charger will be any good

My issue is , if I swap the charger the AGM battery is looked after , but what about the VSR letting that same voltage over to the lead acid starter battery , will it likely overcharge it and destroy it eventually ?

 

Mmmm. Good question Dazza. I've taken off the AGM I had on for the leisure supply and gone back to good old Flooded Lead Acid.

For exactly the reason you asked about. With the slightly higher charge profile I found that the starter battery was gassing and boiling over. That was just off the solar charge controller!
I couldn't figure out where the damp patch under the van was coming from until it dawned on me it was battery acid.
So, you have options.
Manage the charging manually by putting an isolator switch in line. Charge the leisure separately and use the alternator as per to top up the starter and keep some charge in the leisure.

Remove the VSR and upgrade to a battery to battery charger.

Revert back to tech that's compatible with what you've got.

I went back to what works...

It'll all work, but you are shortening the life of one or both batteries by having different technologies in the system.
