    But is it a GL-4 or GL-5?

Morris Lodexol MT75 should work well in the transaxle but if you believe a GL-5 is better their Lodexol SS 75W-90 Semi-synthetic might be a good choice. Personally if I were selecting from the Morris range I’d go for the Lodexol MTF Manual Transmission Fluid.

Crivens! Just what is an ordinary bod to do? I've got 5 litres of Comma 80/90 gl 4 ready to refill my gearbox.......should I hang fire n get summat else? If so what?

  7. GL4 is perfectly acceptable

I'm using GL5 as it is readily available where I am - If I wanted GL4, then I'd either have to order a case (4x5l) or a 25l drum... I don't do enough gearboxes for me to do either!! Hence the research into the GL4/GL5 controversy :)

What’s QXL 80 90 gl5, do you have the spec?
You should use a GL-4, but I guess the arguments will continue whether GL-5 is suitable or not. I use Castrol Syntrans Transaxle 75W-90.

  15. Simples, if it is GL4 mineral oil use it. If it is GL5 don't use it, If it is marked as both GL4-GL5 usually semi or fully synthetic use it.
And yes GL5 does damage the gearbox, phosphorus/sulfur is added to the oil for extreme pressure lubricity but it is detrimental to the brass syncro rings.
Synthetic oils offer high lubricity without the need for additives and marked GL4-GL5 which means they are suitable for GL5 oils and backwards compatible with GL4 apllications.
VW transaxles are a compromise for lubricants, extreme pressure lubricant is only needed for the differential it is not ideal for the gearbox where it can reduce to operation of the syncro rings, gearboxes are happier with lighter oils some just use engine oil or even ATF.

  16. x 2 for Syntrans. Pricey, but worth it IMO.

Id been following a thread similar to this one somewhere or other and decided to change my Morris GL5 80/90 to a more modern oil as it was between five and ten years old. So I dosh up the Opie oils dude online and get my new oil. Swap it over just prior to Techenders and then test drive up there. My box developed a horrible whine in all gears so I’m not best pleased with my ultimate oil purchase. Get back from Techenders and run with it for a couple of weeks then decide to go back to the Morris oil. I get onto Opie oils and order a gallon of 80/90 then when it turns up Im impressed with the beautiful red can then realise I’ve fluffed up and ordered Millers 80/90 and not Morris 80/90 probably down to the influence of The Ned (Savvy B) but it is a real nice tin and looks great great in the garage. So I swap oils ‘again’ and magically the whine disappears for maybe two weeks possibly three but is now back with a vengeance and howling like it needs three quarters max volume through four nine inch tri axial speakers to quell the disturbance. Im knee deep in engine tomfoolery at the moment, im up to my butt cheeks in working on my interior and I’ve now had to take out two of them speakers because of the dents in my head.
I’ve just been down the garage to check something else and it looks like Syntrans was indeed substituted with Transmax manual and I didn’t even notice

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,now where’s that bottle of Ned :burp:
