Where can I buy a new or replacement Type4 engine?

  1. Hi there, hope everyone is safe and well.
Does anyone know who manufactures or builds new VW Type4 engines for a '74' type 2 bus?
My one has seized and I need to source a replacement. I think the one I have is a 1700. I have no idea where to start So any guidance much appreciated!
Also I did think about a second hand replacement but am just concerned I could buy into further problems . I have no idea how much the engine and parts and fitting might cost either . Thank you

  2. might be worth a look: https://www.thevwenginecompany.com/ as any engine builder there is always mixed reviews.

Plenty of second hand units about, it guess it all depends if if you have the time to fit it and tweak it yourself.

  3. Thanks! To be honest I was hoping for a turn key solution. I dont have any mechanical experience so would need a garage to fit if I sourced and purchased the engine.

  4. Where are you located? someone might be able to recommend a local garage :)

  5. We had an original reconditioned engine from a company called Remtech - not sure of spelling.

Didn't they become VW Heritage a few years back; we had a Remtech 1641 many years ago, was quite a good motor

  7. Possibly, we had our engine in 2010 I think

Unlike type-1 nobody makes the crankcases. It's possible to get one from Germany I believe but expensive as they are so rare.

So a reconditioned one is your only option.
Turnkey type-4 will cost a great deal of money for that convenience.

1700 type-4 is the most bullet proof VW air cooled engine, almost impossible to break. Do you know why it seized?

Yep, they are a helpful bunch. I have never had a problem with their engines either, which is nice.
