Wheel refurb

  1. I looked into having my wheels powder coated in Tiaga green but found that if you want anything specific, the cost was ridiculous. I considered using a spray shop which was about £70 a wheel but I would have to either sit the bus on stands until they were done or buy a set of wheels to use during the job. I eventually managed to find a company on eBay that will mix spray cans to your VW paint code and ordered primer, paint and lacquer from them to have a go on the spare, just to see what the job would look like.

Today, I went to my local tyre place and had the painted wheel swapped, so now I have another wheel to be getting on with. I'm liking the results so I'm going to paint the rest. Took two coats of primer, three coats of paint and two of lacquer but I think I'm pleased.

  5. Yep, hopefully I'll not have to scrub the overspray off the tyres afterwards. Bought some extra wide masking tape and loads of paper.

  13. Decided that the last wheel was a bit too grotty to rub down like the others so I took it and got it sandblasted, painted it the same as the others had the tyre fitted again today and it's looking very canny

  14. are they chrome inserts, were can I buy a set fro, letter next to the n isn't working hence spelling error lol

  15. Really nice job, looks like powder coat! For comparison how much do you think powder coating would cost? Then there'd be the extra cost of removing and refitting tyres...

  16. Beauty rings, I got mine from heritage, they were £60 which seems to be the going rate. They're a super tight fit and polish nicely

  17. I got quoted a fortune for powder coating in Tiaga Green which is why I decided to paint them. Then, when I found a local place to sand blast the wheel the bloke asked what I was going to do with it so I told him the tale. He said he can powder coat them using my paint code for 250 the lot which sounded great. For that, you take them in with the tyres on, he does the job and refits the tyres. My local tyre fitter wanted £15 per wheel to refit each tyre, balance and valves so there's £60 straight away.

I'll see how the paint goes and if it doesn't last then I'll get them powder coated by my new best mate

  18. Can you give us some idea what you did as prep?

  19. Sure. Started off with the wheel that had been sprayed silver many times

Using a wire brush attachment fixed to my cordless drill

Whizzed all of the crud off

Then, using 180 grade paper, flattened it back nice and smooth

Then I used a paintbrush and the Henry to make sure all of the dust was out of the crevices

Then mask the valve off (didn't do this on the first one and regretted it)

A tin of aerosol Matt primer from B&Q for £7.00 I used white because thats recommended for my top coat

My top tip to mask the tyre off is to make a cardboard cylinder, cereal boxes stuck together with masking tape to fit exactly between the rim and the tyre, guaranteed not to overspray (thanks dad)

I did four coats of primer and (today) dried it in the sun

Four coats of aerosol Tiaga Green

I used the wire brush attachment to remove the paint where the studs will go, it's a perfect fit

    Four coats of clear lacquer
