Dunno. Remember something about OATs so that's probably it. Made sure it was the right one at the time.

I like them all what ever . The scoobys do impress me and wouldn't rule them out if my type 4 went bang ...but i do quite like the challenge with the air cooled and find the air cooled engine unique and does deserve to be preserved .
It's nice not to have to worry about water leaks anti freeze and hoses bursting .
If i were to have a scooby one concern i would have is , will parts run out as the motor suitable is already its self an oldie ....all the engines i hear o,f are all coming out of either scrap motors or bought runners for that purpose .

If should it happen go bang in say 5 years time will you get the parts or will an engine be easy available as is now ....who knows anice little diesel might be an option in years to come , or dare i say it an electric motor ...gas turbine or hydrogen power unit.
There again i could be running a T 6 in the future and all the worries gone except for depreciation .

  10. I think I'm with @monkeyvanwestybike here. A Bay's not a Bay without an aircooler in, whatever their shortcomings. They don't sound right, and what have you got if you swap it out? A modern engine in a rather cramped, poorly-designed 1970s delivery van. It takes away the appeal. You might as well buy a modern motor home. Or a caravan.

I don't think anyone's saying aircoolers have any great advantage. VW's stubborn adherence to 1930s engineering nearly sent them into bankruptcy in the late 60s. But: they were cheap to make, and they were simple, which is why we like 'em.

I do take the point about fuel consumption, though. We're driving around in vans designed when petrol was 35p a gallon...

I have always held the same thoughts. but tbh snots there are a lot of people that do a lot more miles with these old lumps than I did in the last few years of ownership and they don't want the hassle of these ageing lumps that are getting harder to maintain and the scooby does make a very good alternative.

If I was to buy a bay or even a early t25, I would still want the aircoooled.

  12. Quite right. The Wasserboxer was possibly the most stupid engine ever designed.

My 2.1 in the t25 is a pure joy. When the eternal overheating issue gets sorted it will be even better

  14. Hmmm. You've got too many VWs, BTW.

I know, but it never stops me looking at bays and thinking... You could squeeze that onto the drive, just move the beetle.....

Is that a literal yawn as you're up early or a bored yawn?

  20. I have never seen one or driven one...but I would most definately do the conversion once my newly overhauled type 4 lump in worn out (hopefully in a long time).
As I understand the conversion is easily reversed back to aircooled so my plan would be to keep the aircooled motor possibly and run the Scooby.
As mentioned before its your van so your plan...
