Whilst camping this weekend I've been going through all the little things that need doing on the interior. I'm trying to get it as close to original spec as possible. First up, my window winding handles. I have two different kinds and one is broken. Which is correct: Next, my electrics. It all looks a bit too hacked about with to be original And finally in the cupboard Whats missing and what's non-standard? If anyone has a Berlin Deluxe I'd appreciate a shot of their cupboard going ons...
Winders - no idea as both were broken on my westy. electrics - hopefully nothing on your bus is original as it would be 40ish years old and maybe USA 110v spec? The white plastic 3 pin 240 v socket is non original as is the consumer unit with the trip switches. Fridge controller is og though
My bus is a German import. Whats your thoughts about the plastic arch-shaped housing which is the rear of the leccy hook up socket? Looks to have been hacked into the westy unit? I assume they didn't have leccy hook up from Westy factory? Is the ashtray stock? Cheers!
Ashtry is stock. The plastic arch shaped thingy would originally have been a pair of glass fuses, one on each line. Westy as far as I know had a single socket where your white socket is, and this was used to plug in the fridge.
Hmm maybe not quite. You can see the two fuses and the ashtray which are OG. The brown bakelite socket is where the original German continental socket was. I also have new wiring and a modern trip out under the seat
Also what year is it? Mine is 79 and the rear panel which has the ashtray etc on it is divided up from the panel to the right with a plastic strip. Some earlier models have a single undivided panel I think.
Mine is 76/77 with a division too I believe. So the ashtray looks to be the same position as yours. The duel fuse thing is interesting. I wonder what the cover is all about? I assume my hook up connector has been changed at some point. This is it from the outside: Still all very German EDIT: just Googled it and the cover is just the rear of that unit. So did they not have leccy hook up from factory then?
That's interesting. Now I come to think of it the fuses are part of the original external socket. What I've got is a Schuko plug and socket. I believe it's original, unless anyone knows otherwise.
Admirable to want it all original but don’t compromise on safety with your electrics. You wouldn’t keep the original fuel or gas pipes would you!
It's nice to be original but I thought you were putting a Scooby engine in it? Kinda puts having the correct window winder into perspective
Ok so seems like yes they had leccy hook up from factory and mine has been updated since then which required them to cut the interior panel and part of the unit unfortunately.
But it has been updated which is why it isn't running the OG westy hook up. When I first got my bus @topbananaracing kindly tested all my electrics so no rolling the dice here. That said, I'm likely to redo this aspect anyway as i have brand new interior panels to go in and don't want unnecessary cutting. Solar is also in the plan.
Yep this is still the plan but as I have brand new interior panels to replace the worn items I want to avoid cutting them up if they were never cut in the first place. Engine and interior are separate projects Here's a taste of what's to come: I want it looking stock on the inside powered by stealth engine tech.
Have a look at this page, some photos of the original layout for you. https://www.vw-t2-bulli.de/index.php?de-westfalia-berlin
The problem is that the massive square mains inlet socket is the modern equivalent of an older dodgier design. And there are some of those C type fitted to more modern vehicles that do not feature space for the flap to go in and lock. On those you have to jam the cable in very hard so it barely makes contact as the flap tries to push it back out..Met one of those at TE, it the symptom was no mains hookup until more pressure was applied. Or use a cable with no flap over the live socket holes
