What're your favourite quotes and sayings?

Following on from @Moons Dorothy Parker interlude last week i've been thinking about quotes and sayings and how they colour everyday speech and interactions.
When teaching i'd use Shakespearean insults towards annoying students 'thou art a boil' a perfect way to tell them what you think while expanding their literary knowledge!


'This too shall pass'
one of my favourites - a reminder of the transient nature of all things; good and the bad, elation and pain, nothing is forever.


'all fur coat and no knickers' - style over substance.

'you can't polish a turd but you can roll it in glitter' - there's just so much glitter about nowadays!

I also love regional sayings and try to remember them when i hear one for the first time... i rarely do

 

My wife always tells me off for saying
" all things being equal "

 

there's nowt as queer as folk!

 

My favourite bus related saying that has got me into trouble with the other half more than once:
"It's a half hour job". Two weeks later...

 

patience is an overrated virtue in my book!

 

Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than open it and remove all doubt !
