what security do you have on your t2?

  1. By the time I turn up with my ramps rattling away on every bump everybody knows I have arrived :)

So many security implements are defeatable by a battery powered angle grinder, something that has not been easily available before.
Big metal boxes look good, but carbide and carborundum are harder.

  4. I just pull the centre HT lead from the ignition coil.

  5. Yes most of these security devices can be beaten by a Battery powered angle grinder but lets face it the noise itself would be like and alarm going off.
If you have these visual deterrents that is what they are a deterrent, to prevent an easy target with the theft of your vehicle less likely to occur than one just locked up and parked under a light.

Imagine ten buses in a row.
One of them WILL be stolen but which one?
The one that is easiest to take.
As stated above, you can't stop your bus being nicked but the harder you make it for the thief, the less likely it is to be that one.
It's a case of belt, braces and a piece of string. The more obstacles you place in front of the thief, the longer it will take them and they don't like hanging about.

    Thieves don’t care about noise.
Bristol bike thieves are about here, at the moment.
Mate had a YZ 250 nicked from his garage Monday morning. They pulled the corner of his garage door up, led the bike on its side and dragged it out. Alarm in the garage was going off, they just didn’t care!
Who’s going to stop them without getting a hiding? 3 stabbing in a month here, now.
    There’s ‘Thieves’, and there’s ‘Thieves’.

  9. Yep, many target houses when people are in, not out, to get the homeowner to hand stuff over rather than have to search for it. They don't break in and set the alarm off, they just ring the doorbell and force their way in.

  10. My take on it is that my bus is there to be used. I don't buy in to the general paranoia around bus thefts and am lucky enough not to live in a scrote-infested city. Therefore I don't need or want to live in fear and be one of the people I see putting a wheel clamp on in Tesco car park while they do their big shop

If it gets nicked, it gets nicked. Its insured. I spent 5 years completely restoring it, many hours in A&E and more than a few sleepless nights worrying about paying for the next lot of parts for it. But at the end of the day its a builders van from the 70s.

  12. Your sentiments are understandable, but have you ever had a vehicle stolen, or broken into and trashed?

  13. Thankfully not. But I don't think it would change my outlook much. There are always bad eggs out there, I think its sad to live life in fear just because of this small minority.

Exactly! Time is more important than noise. It doesn't matter how much noise you make if you can get a quick getaway. The quiet thief has more time but the quicker the better. In many respects, a host of cheap and nasty security measures could be better than one top of the range device, simply because it takes more faffing to get through them all.

I went lateral with one of those Crooklock things.
Wedge the lock between the drivers seat and the door. Stupid thing you just have to fold it up across the wheel, stop it pressing the horn and the bus is drivable...

And I have a birdsnest of wiring under the dash including a power supply for the fuel relay and a cheap RF immobiliser.

In a line of 10 buses I would nick the shiny Westy.

Yeah, I kind of agree - although I'd be gutted if Clem got nicked.
Having had cars robbed on many occasions though, its not so much the outer skin - it's the stuff inside. Thankfully I've never actually had a whole car stolen, but the stereo and anything else that took their fancy. For example, I could handle (kind of) my old 35mm camera gear getting robbed from a car park when I stopped to get some food shopping on an extended adventure around Scotland many many years ago - but they took the whole camera bag: including all the rolls of film I'd shot in the previous 3 weeks. No doubt they chucked them in a bin, they meant nothing to the thieves - but they meant a huge amount to me. The smashed window was inconvenient, and I was fond of the camera (I had another one with me that they didn't find), but the rolls of film....

  18. I’m thinking of getting one of these:
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/192429573314

Visual deterrent and I can sleep with it by my side as a physical deterrent if anyone unwanted decides they want to come in

Thing is with security devices, the cost of them is minuscule compared to the price & inconvenience of loosing the van - or anything in it. That’s a problem...smash a window and whatever is there (ipad, laptop etc) is there for the taking. There contents invaluable.

The world is ruined by the minority, and it seems the world is becoming more and more centred around a minority (take your pic). But life’s woes are generally a minority occurrence. We wear seatbelts not out of fear of crashing, but as part of a sensible precaution against the unlikely event of. It’s the same for crime deterrents.

Devices bring down insurance costs and pay for themselves. If it’s a matter of £100 and an extra 5mins of faffing (not fearful but sensible), then go for it.

When I get my engine back the 123+ Tune distributor also has a built in immobiliser

So all i’ll need is smash proof glass and impenetrable locks

  19. I was thinking of putting mine on one axle stand, removing one wheel and slinging the wheel in the van, then putting a locking wheel nut on the bare hub. This would not take too long.
Anyone know of a locking wheel nut that would work?

  20. - engine lid lock
    - standard steering wheel lock
    - basic alarm (although the only person to set it off is me)
