I've always loved the P3, P4 Ferraris from the late sixties. The combination of the incredible beauty of the cars plus the sound of the screaming v12's these things had is just fantastic.

If I'm in pure fantasy mode, then I'd make this a specific car; chassis 0850 is actually a 412P (effectively a P3 but with carbs instead of injection). These were made by the factory for "customer" race teams, this one being run by Ecurie Francorchamps in '67.

Why this particular car? Well, it has a particularly interesting history; by 1970 this car was no longer competitive and was purchased by Dino Martin, the son of Dean Martin. He paid to have the car converted for road use and ran it as a road car in LA.

I nearly whacked the central reservation of the M2 when I pulled on to it in my Marina back in 1985.
The carpet had wrapped round the steering column on a roundabout just before and prevented it from turning even slightly left at about 70mph...
Until I snapped the carpet and yelped my way back into the left hand lane .
Fortunately it was about 11 at night and nobody was in the way.
This one also had asymmetric front discs because of rust. Pulled to the right on light braking, then centred up as the disc bent on hard braking.
No starter ring on the flywheel. I was fit enough to push start it by myself on a level road, but usually parked facing downhill or visited filling stations on a slope in Southampton.
150mpg of oil, never had to change the oil.
    Sparkplug fell out once.
Drove it 100 miles with no coolant water on a -5 degrees C night at 70mph. Spent a weekend sourcing radiator hoses, filled up with antifreeze next time instead of just water.
Float in carb float chamber grounded out on the rust at the bottom and jammed at indicated 100mph (downhill past Rownhams Services on M27) . Drove another 10 miles with petrol pouring on the exhaust.

When we were rich enough to send our kids to private school, I wanted to turn up and crush the Chelsea Tractors in something like this.

However now all I want is a Porsche 914 so I can play engines.

  7. Haven't got just one. These two are on par with each other to me.

One of my all time favourite motor racing pics, taken at Brands Hatch in 1970. That's what 500bhp on a streaming wet track does!

Porsche 917 for sale - nearly one of those in that @philntfc Brands Hatch photo - very interesting engine views from underneath in the pictures under the story ...

And a bit of fiddling with currency converter and historical inflation calculators reveals the original 140k Deutsche Mark price on the invoice is the equivalent of £170k in todays money .

I suspect they want a lot more than £170k for that car now...

  12. Back in the 90s my mate had a Maxi which we would tear around the country roads, bouncing about on the settee in the back...great! My other mate had about five allegros outside his cottage, no shortage of spare parts for whichever one that actually worked.

I was hitching to work in the 80's and as per normal having missed the bus I was getting late for work. Fortunately a very nice man in a lancia delta integral who worked for March Engineering picked me up. He asked if I minded fast driving and I said no, esp as I needed to get to work. I worked about 10 miles away in Bicester. I think we made it in about 5 mins :)

  14. If I won any money I'd go buy a air cooled Brazzy bay and never want another car ever again!!

  15. Well...you would after it had rusted away after 3 years ;)...

  16. Naaah, rest of my winnings would be invested in waxoyl and Schutz! :p
