One of our neighbours has this Camper in her drive. I know the family and have been talking to them about it. It's only had two owners and has been in this family since the early eighties. Underneath looks surprisingly solid but as you can see from the pics there is work to be done. The engine runs and the van was in use up until about 5 years ago when the owner became ill, he sadly died last year. Anyone any thoughts on whether you think its worth taking on, any suggestions about cost on replacing the panels?
If your on a tight budget and want to buy a van in instalments it might be worth doing. Buy it, buy some panels, do some work, buy some more panels....do some more work. Did you want a bus to use or a bus to work on? It is cheaper to buy a solid bus? There is a good thread on here comparing costs, restore vs restored. There are ongoing restorations on the forum that started out with worse looking vans. Are you wealthy or a are you a good welder?
Its only patina ! I would to keep another on the road ...........and the story that goes with it, its a journey .......but as Silver says ^ above ................before anyone says it ' I am not mad my mother had be tested'
Thanks guys. I'm not wealthy or a welder! Part of the problem here is the heart loves the story...my head on the other hand...!
And so far we've only seen the back half ... If the front is in similar condition that's a load of panel replacement and welding work to do If you cant do yourself and even if you could the price would have to be right i.e. cheap
Certainly gonna cost a bit to get that road worthy again! Personally I'd look for a more solid starting place unless the sides and front are immaculate!
all depends on how much they want for it, id happily take it on if it only needs the bodywork doing. people call me mental, but i love bodywork!! but if as you say, your not a welder or have several money trees in the garden, then turn and run my friend!! buses are one of the only cars where the 'buy a knackered one cheap and fix it' system does NOT apply!
Appreciate all your advice, had a feeling that would be the response! The front is not as bad as the rear, but does need work! I had a chat with the family one son wants to keep and do it up, he just hasn't got round to it! I think if I made them an offer they would take it, but I think you guys are right, out of my league! Konaboy, I will let them know you are interested and pass details on if they are. Cheers
