Westy Hinges.

  1. Hallo, I have a 3/4 rnr bed and wanna build a full width. I have the proper westy hinges, but when I built the bed I must have built it incorrectly, as the seat is too high when it's a seat, but is level with the rear section when flat.....

Is there anyone who happens to have the sizes and locations of the bolt holes and what not for the hinges on the end panels?

    Much thanks.....

  2. A picture would help.

  4. My seat is now removed, and I'm gonna build a new one, full width this time.

All the pics I've seen of westy hinges like this have the bit that's bolted to the side running parallel with the floor of the van and the top of the side?

  5. Are they the wrong way round?

& here are mine test fitted, early late bay Westy from the Continental model.
What strikes me is that on both @Dicky 's and mine is that the bar that bolts onto the support is very nearly horizontal. Quite different to your pics.
What model are the Westy hinges from @Rixy ?

Full width ones bolt through the wheel arches, so it's nigh on impossible to get them orientated incorrectly.

Moons, the ones in the pics above were from a full width bed. You can just see the rusty attachment point hanging beneath in the curve of the vertical wooden side support.

It is possible to get them to work right but in my case I had to mount the top bendy support bit on the raised part of one of the over engine corrugations rather than in the valley (as standard).
It makes no difference in use as the cushion is thick enough to compensate.

    21mm bed boards IIRC...

  9. I'm not sure what model westy they are from. I built the bed that they are currently bolted to, so the wonky angle is my fault.

But at the time I was in a rush, and just wanted it to work. It's been ok for 2 years but the seat height had always been too high and upright, and now we're going full width anyway.

  10. But as you say, all the normal ones seem almost horizontal.

Also, i do not have the mounting straps that bolt to the top of the engine bay cover firewall bit.

Can't decide whether to bother with these or whether to buy a new steel frames bed.

Out of curiosity I'd unbolt the front fixing on the bar & tilt it upwards towards the horizontal. That should allow the backrest to rake back a bit?
The mounting bars do support the top of the backrest when the bed is deployed but you could easily fix a bar across the top of the firewall to support the panel when the bed is made up. Bit of a faff, but doable.
