"We don't do front wheel tracking for a VW T2" !

  1. That's what the tyre place just told me - "it's too fiddly..." !

    What are they on about?

Lol, they probably mean they don't want to try and loosen 40 year old rusty nuts... fairies.

  3. ^this. No real reason why they shouldn't do the tracking, as a Bay's exactly the same as any modern car. Also, they may not have the data on their magic machine.

  4. On an old non-vw the wheels got misaligned and the tire place couldn't get them to move with their normal gear. We had to take it somewhere where else where there was some kind of heavy duty pneumatic thingamejig.

  5. Which is just to say that the tyre man might know that this gear isn't strong enough for old vw wheels.

do it yourself, I set mine up after fitting new tie rods. Hasn't worn the tyres and drives pretty straight..

  7. Had mine done locally at a specialist a couple of months ago. A lot of places that aren't really specialist are probably best avoided. Ring around and find someone that wants to do it!

  9. How do you set it up yourself, and what toe-in/out should it have? My T2 appears to have minimal steering play but I have to set a different tack angle on the steering wheel depending on whether the wind is blowing from the left or the right.

Mine wasn't very sophisticated, I set the wheels parallel and then adjusted each track rod end a turn each to give a bit of toe in. The caster angle on mine is out as I didn't mark the nuts when I swapped to dropped spindles so I figured as the geometery was all over the place I'd live with it for now until I needed to set it up properly.

  11. Had mine done at my local exhaust tyres and battery shop in Worcester. Initially they had no idea how the eccentric nut worked until I showed them. The boss was so pleased his guys had learned something that day that they only charged me half price.

Since then they have given up their ramp and tools for free to allow me to change my own clutch cable. Nice guys.

It is a bit harder on our van due to only one track rod is adjustable so this can put the steering wheel out then you have to adjust the bar that goes to the drop arm

Camber is a pain as well as the adjuster rust to the spindle and you need a very thin spanner (a viscus fan one fits )

I do like an eccentric nut especially at a tyre quick fit centre.;)

  14. Plenty of eccentric nuts down our local tyre place, although they do do a good job.

They wouldn't have a clue about doing the camber on a Bay, tho'

Found a tyre place to do mine eventually. Gave them the correct setting. Some time later: "All done" they said. "Can't go wrong with dead ahead" they said, having ignored the settings completely and set to 0...

  17. If you take it to a local specialist what setting do you tell them you want?

  18. Iv no idea. I went to someone who had the settings!

  19. Hi,

Where was this in Worcester, interested as I'm from there too

  20. Tried to get a set of old rostyle wheels balanced for my MG and the local tyre shop, said they could'nt balance them on the machine, so I asked 'If I came in for anew set of tyres you would turn me away then?' they looked at eash other and said, 'OH'. Went somewhere else and they did them no problem!
