Waterproof van covers

  1. Does anyone use a cover for their van?

Mine is being kept on the drive, and I need to buy a cover. I hear that the JK ones are not 100% waterproof and I know that VW Heritage do one, but I have no info on it. My Van has a large mesh sunvisor, so I am not sure if they will even fit, so should I get one designed for a popup roof??

If anyone knows of a good make to use, and has any pics of it on, that would be great.

    Cheers,

    Simon

  2. I've got a JK one

Like you said, not 100% waterproof. Some people have found that condensation builds up between van and cover but I've not found that yet ......but the bad weather is only just about to start.

Where water can puddle (like on the flat of the pop top roof) water does seep through and so it does get wet under ........it then forms a puddle which builds up between cover and van and then spills over onto the roof of the van and into the gutters.

on the sides where water can just run off it stays water proof and dry

its not a bad cover tough and as I've got no windows in mine at present it keeps the worst of the weather off

I've not tried the heritage one

  3. I didnt have an official one but used my sisters caravan cover ,it fitted really well and was breathable but condensation would build up between the covers and since the van was covered it wouldnt dry out unlike in the open air so I think it did more damage really :(

The JK one is fine as long a you take it off to give the van an airing every now and again. Mine fitted with a pop-top no problem. I haven't got a visor but can't see it causing a problem.
If you get water pooling on the poptop, put something under the cover to create a fall.

  5. cheers for the replys.

Anyone tried a Heritage one, or one from a company called Protec??

  6. Why don't you just buy the cheapest one that fits and make the thing waterproof with Nikwax?
Hell, with a couple bottles of Nikwax you could cover it with an old surplus parachute if you wanted to.
And do be sure it's on some sort of pavement. It kills me to see an old bus parked on dirt. Poor things. Doomed, those bus's are.

I have a protech cover for mine after having issues with the silvery ones from JK - The protech ones are excellent they are fully waterproof - breathable - with a soft fabic on the inner surface - more expensive but keep the bus snug as a bug in the winter. Not sure if they are still in existance though as the link I used no longer connects - a shame if they have!

  8. I use a tarp over mine in winter

  9. We use a JK one ,
and put a kiddies football in the middle of the front luggage rack to stop the pooling and gave it a good dose of th e aforementioned NIKWAX, good value for money we think, easy to get on and off the van in a matter of minutes. :)

  10. I think I'll ask for a JK one for my birthday. :)

  11. I've been thinking of getting a cover, though am a bit worried that over time it may damage the paintwork withany rubbing? Unless you wash the bus every time you have taken it out, its bound to get some dustgrit etc on it, and am just worried that the cover may rub against that and act like sandpaper on the paint.

Has anyone experienced anything like that? Or is it just me being to careful! lol

Had ours for about 15years and never had it covered I find a good think coat of paint works a treat :)

  14. I have just got a JK deluxe cover used (but like new, thx Gumbo!) I'm very impressed by the fit and quality. They've been making them for afew years and have obviously worked to ensure its evolved into a very good quality product. Someone else has answered, put footballs on the roof to prevent pooling, the air circulation around it will be sufficient to ensure it stays dry underneath. Things to avoid are damp areas, don't place your van behind a North facing wall or under trees, on grass etc - a van parked on grass will rot before your eyes, especially if you have a cover over it. If you're keeping a van indoors air circulation is essential unless you have effective temperature and humidity control, which is very costly. Best to leave windows cracked open and an outside window open or provide air bricks if in doors
    :)
