Came across this advert the other day. I've not seen the wood look speedo pod and glove compartment before. Were these offered as an extra does anybody know. Just curious ??? http://www.vwclassics.co.uk/index.php?page=rhd-vw-kombi-2
I've seen a few with the wood effect on the glove box door and speedo pod so it might have been an option. It's in one of the brochures I've seen somewhere.
I've seen it in the South African imports, and it does look like fablon... The one I seen the stuff had starter to warp and bubble... Looked plop.
I actually thought about doing that to my dash, but it kinda looks like the sort of thing Chrisradioman would stick on his bus just because he's long ago run out of sh*t to fix. ^-^
I have to put my hands up and say I did it but it needs work so it's another project for next year because mine went a little bit weird in the sun. Going to try with proper laminate next.
It is. The south African one is and so was mine. I found really thin wood veneer from a model shop in London that I glued onto sticky backed plastic.
Wood veneer is hard to work with because the wetness from the glue causes it to warp and bubble. You have to place heavy even pressure on every sq inch until it dries. This would be especially hard on a rounded surface. If you're going to attempt it, I would first use a strong, flexible, heat tolerant, low moisture, fast drying glue like Goop, then lay loosely filled bags of sand over it for even pressure. Just a thought. (Or,.. clear fiberglass resin would probably set before the wood could warp. Just put waxed paper under the sand bags so they don't bond to any unseen drips.)
if i can be serious...........i know! to make veneer stick and form to the shape correctly car restorers vacum seal the wood in a bag until it's dry. btw baywatcher - nut behind the wheel - lol
