The cab steps are terrible if you mean just the step. Whole front arches are a better repair and better quality (not klokker).
The front arches including the step were/are thicker than the rear arches. Rather than less thick the steel is a bit softer/less springy. That's life.

Hi everyone, I have noticed over the past years VW kombi T2 parts are becoming harder to get and it is taking longer to back order. I do not what is going however since their is such a high demand of replacing these parts as they are other 40 years old and all rusted out why cannot they bee re made. I am struggling at home in my garage to patch together a a pilar why is it so hard and impossible to buy whole new a pillar. Roof strengtheners and pillar connectors ect A-B connector body panel skins, all impossible to get a hold on. I do not want to complain as you can still by 75% of all parts, it is just the 25% that I need I cannot get. I do not know what it is like with other classic and vintage cars or am i supposed to manufacture the parts my self?

 

I think it’s a case of buying a body cut.

 

You could also try finding a metal fabricator to bend you some of the missing pieces. This works well for things like strengtheners and pillars that are pretty generic looking.

 

How would you describe said piece to the fabricator? There is nothing generic about any of it... maybe I'll give you u-channel for some of the main chassis.

75% is pretty good going, there are very few classics where you can get every part to build a new shell. People do have to resort to making the missing bits themselves, or stitch in repair pieces into an original part.

Lol, that’s what I was picturing...But I think for some things it usually is a small section...like the bottom of a A or B pillar. The whole thing is quite complex. The bottom 4 “, not as bad. A fabricator might be able to help with that. Just a thought.

 

It must make Dean cry seeing that when he’s trying to patch together fresh air joined by the odd bit of rust.

 

At the end of the day it's affordability rather than availability that's the problem.
There's a line somewhere where it becomes illogical to spend over £x on a front end like that to restore a rusty bus...but they are more than £x these days so what to do?

Fabricate I would not fancy myself - keep looking for a cut, hope for the best and fix another part while you wait for the right part at the right price to turn up.

If you are prepared to spend £1k+ on a front clip you can have the same. I doubt anyone will cut out the parts you need - it would ruin the chance of selling the roof or a front clip.

ok i am starting to make the pieces of metal my self. I am only practicing for now but what size metal thickness is the a pillar and inner roof strengthens? 1 or 1.2 mm?
