VW T2 1972, building a totally new car

Discussion in 'Restorations' started by Ziiga, Jul 23, 2013.

  1. Hello guys!

I've been looking this forum for a while so i think it's time to introduce my projekt to the world here, online. :) With two other friends we bought this van in 2007. We had unrealistic plans with it. Just to rebuild brakes, install good engine and enjoy the holidays in this van. But luckly the things didn't go that way. Body was to rotten...

The time pass by and two years ago i paid their shares. The van was all mine. I will introduce the whole project in pictures slowly but first my plan:

    - Rebuild the whole body
    - Instal VW t3 chassis
    - Instal Subaru EJ20 engine
    - Instal Subaru 745 gearbox with flipped differential
    - Front brakes: Impreza calipers, Audi A6 discs
    - Rear discs: Golf 3 gti calipers, VW sharan discs
    - Subaru brake booster
    - Rear fitted radiator

    Thats all for now....

  2. great post ..welcome to the tlb,
i look forward to the scoobi install, and all the other great ideas...:)

where are you ..it looks rather pleasant ...

  3. Im more interested in the fact youve built it onto a T3 chassis. Seen a pseudo split done like that but not a bay. Did I read that correctly?

  4. yes is`nt the t3 body wider ,so you would have had to move the swing arms etc inwards...?

    Looking forwards to the pictures...welcome...

That's one hell of a project

  6. Hi, i'm from Slovenia, country next to Italy and Austria.

Jp, you read it right. As you can see on second photo, the van is already on T3 chassis.

    So next with project

Because of very rotten chassis i started to looking for something modern and 10 years younger. Torsion bars vs. coil springs. The plan was born. I took vw t3 82' , outer sills ware not in very good shape but chassis was in mint condition. And at the end i wanted to build something new. Chassis was shortened for 70mm and narrowed for 110mm.

Before sandblaster, the old sills has to come off. Rust everywhere

  12. i'm liking this a lot, nice ideas for the chassis and mods, very race taxi and i'm guessing will handle like a dream:cool: . Your right rear tyre is fitted the wrong way BTW ;)

Fascinating - one big project

  14. Ok, i'll show you the process of rebuilding the subframe. Everything was very rotten. I send parts to sandblaster and take them on powdercoating. Suspension is assembled from original swingarms and replaced all balljoints and silentblock from Rouville. Coil springs are from FK, 50mm lowered. Bilstein shocks. I think that this combination has to drive well.

Rear arms were simply too rotten to use. So i bought a replacement part, used ofcourse
