  1. The correct description is 'UK Registered on or before 7th January 1974', so it includes 7th January; but if it's Build Date is after 31st December 1973, you'd be proving it's not built in 1973, and would have to wait until 1st April 2015 to gain Historic Vehicle Exemption.

  2. Remember, the correct process is to send to DVLA your proof of Build Date, and await confirmation that they accept this and return your V5C, best to do this several month in advance of 1st April, so that you have less hassle at the Post Office, because I am fairly certain that they would not be able to issue you with Historic Vehicle Tax on the day you presented your, for example 1974 UK Registered VW, with a Birth Certificate, as I don't think that they have the power to accept these at the Post Office Counter.

  3. this is what i was trying to say , mine was built june 73 , registered may 74 prob because it was converted in this country by devon , i taxed it in december for a full year because i didnt want hassle right in the middle of the camping season. They still dont seem to have put a proper brief out on this for 2014 but i shall try n find out before i send stuff off . cheers for your replies  its all going to go tits up again in october by the sounds anyway

  4. Nah, in October we can fix our original Tax Disc from the date it was first put on the road, all authentic like.

It's a shame we can't just walk into a post office, and hand over the birth cert. I'm in the same boat as barnyrubble. There's no way I trust the dvla, with any of documents, let alone my original VW birth certificate!

  6. Scan them in, I sent copies to the DVLA, mind you that was when there was a Local DVLA Office here in Shrewsbury last November, but I'm sure the Post Office Counter Staff would witness the original document and sign the copy as valid.

Just spoke to the DVLA, who advised they will NOT accept a photocopy, signed or otherwise, and was also clarified by a manager, it must be a original birth cert.
So you need to send, if your vehicle is registered 74+, but built prior to Jan 74, the following to the DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DZ

    V5C
V10-and on the form fill in when you need the tax to start from
ORIGINAL copy of your birth cert

I'm going to the post office, for it to be sent by recorded delivery, and a recorded delivery return, so no excuse, for any lost documents.....I hope!

  9. I HATE THE DVLA!!!!!!!

Just had a letter back from these clowns.
    Is says ( 3 errors )

    1. We are on a Q plate. ( we aren't )
    2. Historic only applies to Pre 01/01/73
    3. They missed out part of our number plate in the letter, no date, and the only phone number was for hearing loop users.

Phoned them, and was told our van was first registered 01/01/74 but the need proof it was build ie Birth Cert or Enthusiast club letter.
They agreed that it must have been built prior to that date and the DVLA was unlikely to have been at work on New Years Day in the 70's.

So I legged it to the Post Office to attempt it there. Sadly no Historic button on the system at our little post office.

    Bum holes!!!

  10. Mine was Built on 3rd dec '73...so obviously had to PROVE this to DVLA!! As my tax ran out on feb 28th '14...I sorned it for 1 month...sent off my ORIGINALS of insurance cert & MOT...& PHOTOCOPY of 'birth certificate, and a V10...and an amended V5....I got my amended (to historic) V5 on 5th April...and my Tax disc Today!! (along with my certs etc). Admittedly I rang DVLA '3' times to get info during this period,..and got 3 different answers...along with their tone of 'I don't know so don't really care' attitude!! They really were useless!

  11. Thanks for all the info above. Just found this on the Dvla web site, so Hoot won't need a birth certificate as regestered 1-1-74

The first time you tax a vehicle in the historic vehicle tax class you

    • A Vehicle registration certificate (V5C) – this must clearly show that the vehicle was made or first registered before 1 January 1974. If you do not have a V5C, or if you think the age shown is incorrect, you will need to produce an extract from the manufacturer/factory record or an extract from the appropriate ‘Glasses Check Book’. Dating certificates from a vehicle enthusiasts’ club are not acceptable to change the date of manufacture for an already registered vehicle.

(If the V5C indicates that the vehicle was registered from 1 January 1974 up to and including 7 January 1974, we will let you register it as a historic vehicle, based on the assumption that the vehicle would have been made in the previous year).

    • An appropriate test certificate (for example, an MoT certificate, if the vehicle needs one by law). You no longer need a MoT or GVT to tax a pre 1960 vehicle.

    • A certificate of insurance

    • A filled-in ‘Application for a tax disc’ (V10), which you can get from www.gov.uk/browse/driving, and Post Office® branches that issue tax discs.
