vehicle excise duty

  1. Lets face it, they should already know the age of your vehicle, they have it and your taxation status on computer, and are quick enough to fine you for non-compliance, so surely we the client should be properly serviced...and I don't mean fecked up the backside with a big fine, or paying any VED after 1st April...

  2. Let's hope that when the details are 'made available nearer the time' that it will be easy and quick process!

  3. From what I have read on various places on the web lately,it seems any vehicle registered up to the 7th Jan 74 will be classed as being built before 1/74 so may well be sorted automatically. After that we will have to provide evidence of build date but we shall see.…….o_O

  4. they know it all if they can be bothered , your chass and engine number are on your v5 this can be looked up and this will give the date it was made ,this is on VW owners club site etc etc are they saying your V5 cant be right after all they provide it  , why do they always make everything so difficult when they are "giving something"

Wel today i attended at the local post office

I thought i would let things calm down and the creases ironed out in relation to issuing new historical tax discs

    I went armed with :-
    Log book
    Insurance documents
    Mot certificat
    Sorn print out
    Form v10
    Vehicle birth certificate
    A EMPTY WALLETT

I handed all documents over , i said i think this should now be a historical tax this time , the lady didnt even look at my documents other than the log book , she got out a wad of tax discs , filled one out and said to me "HOW ARE YOU GONNA PAY FOR THIS "

My heart sank , i said it should be free as i believe it is now classed as a historical vehicle , "WHY DIDNT YOU SAY " she said

She filled in the log book section changing the taxation class to historic , asked me to sign it at the bottom , filled in another tax disc and handed it to me "MUST BE NICE TO GET SOMETHING FOR NOTHING " she said , ."ILL SEND THE LOG BOOK OFF FOR YOU " she said

I asked if the post office had had many such applications and she said i was the first to apply at the office.

So success and simplicity itself , twelve months tax with nil payment now displayed no problems end of saga

I am by no means an expert on this , but if you have a birth certificate ,i would attend at a large post office along with the other relvant documents and seee what materialises,
Various bit of info on the internet says the date of manufacture , if can be proved, can be a date that can be used for taxation classification after 1st april 2014 so long as it is before 1st january 1974

But i may be talking complete hogwash

If successful , a brucie bonus is they will post the document off to dvla free of charge for you

  17. You just need the V5c and don't forget your MoT certificate.

  18. You don't even need the MoT Certificate, as soon as they scan the V5C they know whether your vehicle is Insured and MoT'd, its like ANPR but using a bar code reader. It all comes up on screen, they first scan the new tax disc, then your V5C, and the computer tells them what options they have, and if you've filled out Section 7 as Historic Vehicle, and signed it, then the option for Historic Vehicle Exemption is zero rated VED.

They just write out the new Tax Disc, retain half of the V5C, and hand you a shiny new Tax Disc, whats rest of the V5C, and tell you the new V5C will be issued within six weeks by the DVLA.

If you still have time to run on an old Tax Disc, you fill out a V14, attach the old Tax Disc, and post it to the DVLA in Swansea, they then send back a cheque for whats left, within six weeks.

Thats very muuch what happened to me ,with the exception i had no refund.

In barneyrubbles case above i was suggesting he takes all his documents, including birth certificate , as the intention was to establish if his 1974 REGISTERED vehicle can fall under the new historical tax even though it was MANUFACTURED BEFORE 7 th january 1974 .
Information around the net is that dvla accept that any vehicle registered before 7 th january 1974 will have been manufacture before 31 december 1973 and eligible for nil cost tax. And that the birth certificate willl prove that date where a log book may not , also the dvla systems may not prove date of manufacture.

  20. MoT had only just been done so may not have been on database yet. Took it along on the advice of DVLA.
